View Full Version : An 'Advanced' How to Play Video

I'm planning on making a how to play video loosely based on the one in game. The difference is that I'm going to include techniques normally considered advanced and show a few basic applications.
I've already got a basic idea of how I want to set this out and what I want to include, but before I get started on the bulk of work, I'd like to hear any suggestions the community has.
So far I was planning to include the following techniques, in a structured format, so things are logically paired with similar techs.
Short hopping - Qwester Recorded
Fast falling - Qwester Recorded
L-Canceling - Qwester Recorded
Combination - SHffLing - Qwester Recorded
Wavedashing - Qwester Recorded
Waveshielding - Qwester Recorded
Wall Jumping - Qwester Recorded
Teching - standing, rolling, ground, wall, wall jump, edge tech - Aftermath
Shield Grabbing - Qwester Recorded
Edge Hogging - Qwester Recorded
Edge Hopping - Qwester Recorded
Edge Wavedash - Qwester Recorded
Dash Dancing - Qwester Recorded
Fox trotting - Qwester Recorded
Dash Canceling - Qwester Recorded
Pivot - SynikaL/Thomas TipmanRecorded
Jump Canceling - Grabs and smashes - Qwester Recorded
Chain Throwing - Qwester Recorded
DI - Helios
Crouch Canceling - Qwester Recorded
C-sticked Aerials - Qwester Recorded
Meteor Canceling - Qwester Recorded
Reversing Aerial Neutral B - Qwester Recorded
Powershielding - Qwester Recorded
All the names next to techniques give an indication of who's going to be recording the footage to be used in that section.
I realise that it's fairly important I get this right.. as potentially it could end up teaching a whole new generation of newbs how to play, get it wrong and I'll probably get shouted at.
Anything I've missed out? Suggestions? Improvements? Or just feel like shouting at me now to get it out of the way?
Go ahead.
Edit: If this goes well, I'm tempted to continue working and move onto character specific vids. This might be a bit over the top, but I'll see how things go.

How long do you want it to be?

Wow excelent idea I think that it should be as long as it takes to teach the techniques and the uses of them.
I have seen alot of how to videos and one thing that I thinK you can do that would improve concept is to show the technique being used (of course), then show its purpose (example of this would be showing someone teching the throw of a captain falcon and missing the shffled knee that he does imeadiatly after wards.), and then go one step further and show the down fall of the technique {if there is one} (an example would be showing someone getting tech chased by the same captian falcon).
this way I believe people may get a better understanding of the nature of the techniques and their true purposes.

I really hadn't considered length, I'm more worried about covering everything than worrying about the video being too long.
Varuna: That's exactly the concept I'm trying to put into practice, glad someone shares my vision ^_^.
You should put Dash Dashing and Foxtrotting. A lot of questions have been asked about these two, and it would clear things up.

I wouldnt worry about the length.
Although I think you might wanna add a section about character specific techniques. Short Hop Lasers, Float Canceling, WaveShine (I hate this term btw), Missle Canceling, Bomb Jumping, the sort of things a newb wouldn't really think of. Granted pretty much every character in the game has things of this nature, but mabye cover the bigger ones like bomb jumping, short hop laser, and float canceling. Great idea.
Edit: Double just canceling, like with Yoshi on Marth.
I really like Varuna's idea of showing an example of its use after explaining the technique. Just take littles clips of pro matches where they use the technique or even go further and show how the technique can be used ineffectivly(maybe something like showing how constantly tech rolling the same direction can cause punishment due to predictability). Of course that would take A LOT of work and its all about what you're willing to do.
As far as the length of the video goes its definetly going to be long as hell and it would probably be best to just split it into four parts or something.
Overall it's a great idea and I'm sure it can even help advanced players smooth out their play.

I'm not going to bother going into prediction and 'mindgames', I'm simply going to show how to execute techniques and then a few applications. I don't expect people to come out from watching this video and be able to win tournaments, just give them something to work on.

In the video where it shows mario and it is teaching the reader how to JC grabs
I noticed that they did it in semi slow motion then put the text "Y" right as you were suposed to press Y and then put up the text "Z" right as you should press the Z button I found this very useful and I think that this should be done when introducing many other techniques particuarly like shffling.
Picture running it on 2/3 modes putting the text "attack" when you attack on the video then " down+L/R" after that when you FF-Lcancel. I can't help but think that this would help newbies understand the feel or the timing of techniques like this.

I have a recommendation on the L-cancelling section. In order to show people the difference with/without l-cancelling, record a clip of somebody like Link doing his d-air, count how many times he can do it in ten seconds. Then show another one with l-cancelling, so people see the difference. Do that afterwards with somebody like Fox's n-air as well, so that even when the difference is less pronounced, people can still tell.
Do you plan to include anything about edge teching? For when you're being edgeguarded, and you do a walljump tech out of something crazy like Marth's f-smash or Samus' charge shot (a la Death From Above)? That would be interesting to see.
You could include in the teching section Crouch Cancel Teching, for when you CC an attack and get slammed into the ground and you tech the slamming part. Not like anyone uses it though, so probably better not to.
Light shielding and its uses?
When talking about wavedashing, maybe mention the platform dash as well.
I like this idea. When people ask about why stuff is important, we can show them with concrete stuff, as well as the more obvious effects so that they'll try them out to improve. I give 3/2 thumbs up.

You should add spiking, ledge guarding and when yu do people specific combos for each.

Look around for vids of the techniques used well in a certain situation, ask the person if you can use the vid in this vid, and use those to show them IRL matches. I basically copied another guys idea earlier in this topic and just restated it because I think it's a really good idea.
Qwester

Thanks for all the input guys, and the encouragement is really appreciated ^^
Rebel581: I've no intention of using videos from other sources, everything I'll use (apart from maybe a few clips in an ending sequence I'm planning) will be staged and captured by yours truly. This'll keep a uniform look throughout the entire vid and it means I'll be able to get the footage exactly as I want it, rather than looking for 'best fit' footage from a third party.
Just incase I didn't make it quite clear in my first post, when I say 'teching' I mean teching and all it's variations, this'll include edge teching. Jump canceling will include from dash/shield etc etc.

i dont know if you added this but tech chasing would be good sorry if someone mentioned it dont yell at me =)

That's a great idea, you should throw in a quick double jump cancel thing, but don't get into chraacter specifics much. It'd kinda throw off the whole thing.
However, there is one really important thing that most people don't notice. Csticking aerisals while fastfalling or moving the opposite direction.

I've already got a section marked up for exactly that peaches :)
I don't really want to put anything in this vid that can't be done by all the characters, I can cover character specific stuff at a later date, in it's own self contained how to play video.

I think you should add different ways of getting around sheild grabbing, this inclduing a shuffled aerial into dodge, shuffled aerial into jab, etc.
Oh and yeah, you really should include certain character specific stuff, such as SHL, samus' bomb recovery, jiggly's pound recovery, marth's double fair, and so on, perhaps in the end of the video, with a text saying "Try and find out what your own character can do!"
<_<
>_>
*runs*
And the first thing I thought when I read this thread was "Oh, I'd like to help with this! I'm gonna start making video clips ASAP! ^__^"
But now you don't want help with it ;__;
Qwester can skip the Peach-techs as I'm currently (although it's on hiatus for the moment) doing an indepth Peach guide on Peach, including various techs such as teching, wavedashing, Peach shuffling, etc.

Uhm NOO!!
Just cause someone else has done a vid of wavedashing, doesn't mean Q should rule that out of his vid. Seriously, everyone who sees this vid isn't gonna watch your "indepth Peach guide on Peach" lol

Well, if anyone really wants to help, I'm more than happy to shift some of the work load. As far as I'm concerned, I just don't want to have to look through hundreds of vids to maybe find a clip that shows exactly what I want.
As long as people talk to me beforehand, can capture stuff directly at a reasonable quality and there's some coordination going on, I'm perfectly ok with any help I get.
Just hit me up on IM and we can organise something.
Yuna: Regardless of what you're doing, I still plan on going through all of the characters. At this point in time, I'll be ****ed if I know what'll actually make up most of the content for some of the characters. Expect 20 second vids >_>

Is there any set time of when this is guessed to be finished/released?
Also, I've gotten 2-3 people interested in playing, but they're mad noob *like... 1 picked up a controller last night for the first time*
Are there any other vids that are in a "how to" theme, be it char specific or general, that is in the same format as the vid in the game (says what button is being pushed, etc)? I'd like to put together all I can on a CD to pass out to new people to help them out.

I haven't even started, the plan was to give this topic a week or more to mature, then take all the info and start planning. Then it's just a case of moving through everything and getting it all captured.
Editing will be lots of fun ^^.
There aren't any vids out there that I know of matching your description.

In that time, of course you can mostly only get in the basics, and I understand. 25 chars x 20 seconds is already over 8 minutes.
For Ness I suggest the aerial basics: shorthop aerials (fairchains), full jump aerial to DjC aerial (my favourites is PK shove to Stepkick atuocanceled) and very fast close-to ground DjC aerials preferably into sprintgrabs (Iīve actually DjC.d even bairs to sprintgrabs against real players who can DI.)
For Luigi some basics too... all kinds of Wavesmashes and wavegrabs, wavelanding after shorthop aerial is good too. definetly shorthop doubleaerials, and shuffled double bairs. Many good Luigis I know use this in some way. and also downB recovery so every other topic in Luigi forums doesnīt have to deal with that ;)
Thanks in advance

Does teching include wall techs on recovery?
What about triangle jump?
Wavelanding?

you should do techchasing and some basic mindgames too, like the classic rush wavedash back and then take advantage of their wiffing...
Yeah you should do DEFINITELY do techchasing...
This video = great idea.

Seriously though, if I can get my camera to actually work I'm willing to do some of the work. Only problem is it's not working right now.

My friend and I can get a video of whatever you would want done on edgeteching. It'd be Samus v CF, and would include edgeteching, edgetechjumps and stuff. Not sure how long it'd be, but i'd hit him with dfsmash, a missile, the beam, a dash attack, dsmash, dftilt, utilt, and then maybe hitting him against the level with some aerials.
About video quality, i'll try to follow Radix's guide from speeddemosarchive.com, so let me know if you'd want that done.

This sounds like a totally awesome idea and I hope it goes well. I'm rather sure it will, though, due to the extensive planning you seem to be putting into it. I can't wait for the final product, it'll be a monumental day in Smash history. Well, not so much, but many people will be VERY happy with it. (Including myself)

Ok. If anyone wants to help, now's the time to speak up. Just select which technique you're going to record, then send me an IM and we can talk about how to do it.
I think Aftermath wanted to do teching and Helios is down for DI, other than that everything apart from Shuffling is free (I've started work on it).

I got my camera working, is there a specifc way you want the techniques done? Or do we just send a bunch of good footage of the tech being used?
For instance, do we have to have any instructions on the video? Or do we just film it being done in a training mode environment?
