View Full Version : AOB thread

I changed the name of this thread to give us a place to discuss something that has been on my mind for quite some time. I think we should address a few key issues here:
1. Where would the midwest scene be without AOB?
2. Why do some people write AoB?
3. What does it mean to have a tourney without AOB?
4. ahroo?
:dk:
I think once we get these things cleared up, we will have a deeper understanding of the way things really are.

I'm not sure Andy... when are you thinking of having this? I'd definatley be there... you're right never too soon!

i went ahead and posted a thread in the tournament zone for the state crews the other day... the first two people that posted were from california... i think it might get big. I think staying there would be better because there is no way we can house 100+... and i'd guess closer to 150 even maybe... if were lucky. PLus getting everyone to the tourney would be a pain.

LOL
Andy: "Should I do this? Or this?"
you guys: "Yes."
MLG Chicago is a problem, I gotta think about this a little.

MLG Chicago is in December... late December. Why don't we hold a joint tourney AOB? The state crew battles/SMYM5. The state battles can start the tourney and singles can follow thereafter. What about location? Can we get a building for two nights that allows housing? I doubt that there is enough housing available in the immediate area to cover everyone. We can't house 100+ people garunteed, and whose to say we shouldn't expect 150+... None the less, this is probably gonna take both our efforts and planning to accomplish.
What about easter break? When is that? is there an easter break? X-mas break MIGHT be too much with MLG in there too, unless it's the week after X-mas. But will people be back in school again.

That's exactly what I had in mind (I'd figured you already realized that) because my name recognition will help bring people in. I mean most people don't know who viperboy is.
I have a busy week, but as soon as I get the chance I'm going to look around some more for a good location. Honestly though, I'm not too hopeful that I'll find anything good.
I wish someone would just come and say "Hey Andy, I have found the perfect location!"

Hey Andy, I have found the perfect location!
lol
all i know is that if we could get some people on campus to house some people, that would be great. i would definitly like to do it at the smym building if we could, but idk how thats looking. also, i'd love to start this thing sooner than later, but we need to give people some good amount of time to plan this out if we expect them to come. thats just me.

hey andy, what exactly are you looking for? just a bigger place to hold the tourney or one where ppl can sleep over. there are a few places on campus that can be host sites for the tourney. i can ask a few ppl if any can be rented overnight.
as for when, you could break tradition and hold it early january, but i think its a little too soon for planning purposes. i think you should stick w/ the usual smym schedule and do it in april.
the state crews could happen here, but id like it if we could still do teams and singles.
and per se Andy
09-27-2005, 02:05 AM
The only problem with the current location is that it's not available on sundays and it can't be rented overnight. I'm looking for something that could be rented overnight sat-sunday ideally, or if we could find ways to house people we could go with just something that's available during the day saturday and sunday.
The problem with doing april is that, for a 2-day event, people need at least 3 days off of work/school and most need 4. People who fly in sometimes need almost a week to save on tickets. So I think this will have to happen either winter break or summer break.
winter break sounds fantastic... mmhmmm... /nods

Spring Break Smym5!!! Yeah Beotch!!!

Spring break is not necessarily the same for different schools. Even the 2 schools in my town, U of I and Parkland community college, often don't have concurrent spring breaks.
That could cause problems.

shoot for winter break... maybe the week after Christmas? but before New Years Obviously... like the 27/28th???

ok, suggestions off the top of my head.. (ill look into it a little more)
1. you can check at the union, they have rooms upstairs that can be rented out. this is prolly the most expensive option.
2. you can check kenney gym on the northside of campus (springfield and wright). not sure on their power outlet situation.
3. impe or crse (? <- wimpe), not sure about these tho.
4. you could use whatever rso we started last year and try to rent out/reserve multiple rooms in lincoln hall or greg hall or whatever. this should be free as long as the rooms are available and stuff.
lets see.. what else.. ill post if i think of something else.. good thing is that things are less likely to be reserved b/c uiuc will be on break.

Yeah andy i heard you have a pretty sweet DK, we gotta get some matches in at the next SMYM. I've always wanted to play you. You inspire me.

well andy? find a building we can use for this? The state crews and smym singles?
and per se Andy
10-05-2005, 03:48 PM
Oof I am sooo not looking for a building right now. School needs to wind down a notch before I do that.
Capps - I'll see about looking into those, although I don't have that RSO anymore. I didn't bother re-registering it because it didn't do us any good last year and I kept getting annoying emails about people who wanted to join.
Someone else has already registered it this year.
Ooog I do NOT want to have to look for a place, it was such a hassle. Blehhhhhhh

So...
I think SMYM 5 will be exactly like all the other SMYMs and be in April. State crews can happen at FC9.
I have neither the wherewithal (i just wanted to say that word!) nor the composure nor the desire to run a 2-day tournament. I'd go nuts if I tried.

Oh come on. Make it two days. First day - tournament, second day - dance party. It'll all work out.

Erm, you guys aren't the only ones who had to play your own crew, I had to play Squared too. The answer is pretty simple, stay in winner's bracket and you can eat a loss to a crewmate. :p
I think...the SMYM facility is way too small to try and host state crews. <_< That'll draw a big crowd. Jeff, we need to start looking into FC13: The Ship is Lost in Time

Wait, WE'RE hosting FC15: The Ship Tolls for Thee?? I thought we agreed that EarthBowser could pretty much handle it. He seems to have a solid plan for a 2-day tourney, I think he could handle a 3-day.
Captain, what say you?

Oh my, yes. I've been waiting for this day. Once I'm done with my training, that 3-day tournament will be a piece of cake. Think Double Dare only Marc Summers has a huge screeching guitar. That's how much it'll rock.
KishPrime
10-30-2005, 03:02 AM
What if, instead of Marc Summers, we make it more like The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. And the Fresh Prince can bring his jalopy, and we can all ride in it. That's a better activity for FC16: The Ship is on the Go, though.

Hey now, that's some dagerous thinking there, Prime. But as long as DJ Jazzy Jeff is there too, I think it's a plan.

kinda hard to stay in the winners bracket when in the first round we each got paired with someone from the EC.
i had neo
dark had azen
phat had chu
jesi had husband
i think dyc had oro
our bracket complaints are more about that instead of what happened in the losers bracket, but hey, no johnz.
