View Full Version : Roy's counter bounce

I don't know why this happened and how, but when I was fighting against a Roy player, he used Down-B to counter one of my attacks. Nothing weird here, but I was knocked away by the counter and it looked like I sort of 'bounced' against some invisible wall, changing my falling angle by about 45 degrees, a second after I was hit by counter. I bounced onto nothing....
So I flew towards the upper right corner of Fountain of Dreams, and after a second I sort of bounced and flew towards the down-right corner. I wasn't KO'd by this, but still (btw I was Fox).

I'm not too sure what this is. I've seen this happen a few times when I was using Roy against my friends while we were on FD. Unfortunately not all of them play Fox so you can get an idea how frustrated they were to get killed by something like that because counter acted in such a way that it wouldn't normally.

ya, that's what happens when u get hit by counter

happens w/ marth's as well, though on a smaller scale

But the thing is that it doesn't always happen, Roy's counter doesn't always get you to bounce.

That 45 degree bounce is most noticeable if you Roy-counter a lvl 9 CPU Ganon's Warlock Punch.

Not sure how else you can see it.

ive never really noticed it before a few days ago, but yea, that's happened to me. the first time i noticed it, i was playing a lvl 9 dk, he used his b attack (im not really sure wat its called) and countered it (i was roy).i was playing on the dk jungle level and dk bounced at the 45 degree angle straight into the water :chuckle:

This "bounce" you speak of... it happens when Roy counters a POWERFUL attack; it probably wont happen if you counter Fox's plain A attack, but his Usmash would cause it to happen. Yeah, it happens with Marths too.

Ive had it happen to me but I think its just a bug the developers missed

Are you sure? because I think I hit him with a shffld Nair. Maybe Nair's powerful enough as well.....

^ wow, if you say so.
the Usmash was a example, i bet any smash or D/Utilt would do it. And the cool thing is, is no meteor; is a spike :).

No, they just need to be sent far enough for it to reach there. If it knocks them nowhere it's not going to happen.

Yea, just need to be hit by a decent attack and the counter will ricoche(sp..) the enemy off a invisible ceiling.

this seems to happen when me and a friend are battleing and im roy and he is fox when ever he attacked and i countered he did that invisble bounce so it was really wierd im not questioning it maybe its just a roy thing

The power of the attack doesnt matter. You "bounce" if/when you try to DI after the hit. It only seems like the power of the attack matters because the bounce is most noticeable when you go flying. Just wait til you see Marth's tippered Fsmash "bounce" someone, now thats surprising

Yea, like a said. It always does the bounce but you can only see it when the attack sends you far enough to get there (which isn't hard to do unless they're at 0%). This happens with Marth too but I'm not sure exactly how that works. It's not as effective with Marth and I don't think it has anything to do with DI.

Marth's counter has a set knockback I believe, and Roy's counter is based on the strength of the countered attack and your percentage.

Trust, it only happens when the one hit tries to DI. It does not always happen

Oh, and null= Captain Obvious

Rebel:

You say it has to do with how far counter sends the opponent, but I've just seen your vid: You VS Red2aKrisp (I forgot his name), and when you're countering his FireFox (which also results in you suiciding), he doesn't bounce against an invisible wall, but is still knocked so far you KO'd him. So what I'm trying to say is that I don't think it has anything to do with how far you send him with an attack.

I actually experience this quite often but not just by counters. It doesn't happen alot but when I see it happen to myself I just think "darn" and desperately regain my distance off the edge from how far that "bounce" has sent me off down the stage. Its really awkward but I get it with alot of different attacks.

It always seemed to me that the bounce is caused by if you are hit by the sweet spot or not.

It depends on how much knockback your counter has (and where you hit them with counter - middle of sword = better chance because of stronger knockback) and how much damage your opponent has. It doesn't have anything to do with DI. The opponent just has to travel a certain distance in order for the counter to change your angle. There are times where your opponent gets sent nowhere, others a little on a straight line, sometimes they'll make it to the "turn-point," but won't go down much, others will get past the turn point and start going down. Think of a smash attack. It (usually) sends the opponent in a straight line. But if they aren't hit hard enough, they don't go very far and can break out of that line by moving/attacking/etc... Roy's (and Marth's) counter doesn't send them in a straight line: it sends them in a straight line that "bends" at a certain distance (think of an equilateral triangle without the bottom line). If they aren't hit hard enough, they don't go to that "bend" point, and can move around/etc...

Anyway, am I making sense? I know that was a long post for that, but it's hard to describe...

Perfect. When my computer comes back from purgatory do you mind me taking this and putting it in the counter section of the Roy FAQ so this topic won't come up as much anymore?

Sweet, that'd be awesome! I've always wanted a section in that FAQ...I don't mind you taking it, just give me credit for that section, ok? :D

I have always found the counter bounce usefull, it is so funny when my usual opponent, fox, tries to f-smash or u-smash me and I counter it and he goes to the edge ( we usually play on final destination) and he just bounces almost straight down! I think what you said, Sengin, makes sence. The counter bounce makes most roy players use the counter attack more.

The people I play with refer to the "bounce" as a "roof" since that is the shape of the trajectory you travel.
