View Full Version : Roy's up smash - Meteor Smash or spike??

I noticed that alot of times, and this seems to work only against computer controlled characters, that when you use Roy's up smash attack on them that they influence out and alot of times they get sent flying down at an angle like a Meteor Smash or a spike.
After I did it and killed a CPU with the move I checked the end game bonuses but Meteor Smash wasn't there...so does that mean this move qualifies as a spike suggesting it can't be recovered from? Or maybe it's neither? Anybody know??

A few of the hits to Roy's upsmash spikes the opponent down. I don't know the specifics, but my theory is that the attack knocks the opponent up and down conversly so they will stay in one spot. If the opponent wiggles out when the attack is spiking they will be spiked. As to my knowledge nobody has ever found a way to spike with it effectively, and even if you could up smash isn't a move that one would get many spike kills with.
As for upsmash usage, I use it like I would a Mewtwo upsmash. One would have to be pretty close to the opponent to use, but the multiple hits knock down your opponents sheild and often times knocks it down enough to hit them or they don't shield for the entire duration of the attack. It's also good if you land right behind your opponent after an l-canceled aerial.

I only use it when my opponent actually wants to try and apporach me from above. More often than not it "spikes" them into the ground right next to me, so I can forward smash them if they don't tech away.

Well, it's obvious that the way the move works, is that it does indeed conversely make the opponent fly up and down so that they "stick" in one spot. The thing is, I'm pretty sure the initial hit of the up smash always sends the opponent downwards, because the CPU loves to magically influence out of things as soon as they get hit and they always go flying downwards when they do it during this attack - at least that's what I've noticed, and it seems to be more substancial than coincidental.
Obviously, against a human player, they aren't going to influence out - it's nearly impossible to do as it is - but perhaps maybe you could WD forward into the USmash to catch a recovering player with the very edge of your blade's hit box and with a little luck send them flying down. I've never seen it worked into the metagame, but maybe there is a video somewhere where someone does this, because I could definitely seeing something like that being feasible.
But still I wonder if it's a spike...if it can't be recovered from...because that would be sweet.

As for the topic at hand, this has happened to me quite often.. its basicalle what they already mentioned
off topic: As for usin it in battle, i mostly use usmash when the enemie has low %, and only if i get em with the first attack. dash attack > usmash > fsmash... work most of the time because it gets the enemy while its still Stunned from the previous attack.. also Usmash doesnt send him flyin up.. it sets perfectly for Fsmash.. try it.. let me know.. maybe it just works with me cuz CPU and my friends suck haha..

Can you think of any vids that utilize this well? I'd like to see it.

There aren't any vids that utilize this well because it isn't a very effective technique. It's too random to learn how to do it on command, and even then it wouldn't be all that great.

Ever time i use Roy, i just use that move when my opponet is above me. I found out that this happens more when they hit the tip of the sword, but that's just me.

Ok, I see. I agree that it can't be used effectively in games against good players. I never use Roys Usmash anyway.

I'm *pretty* sure it's a meteor
I always thought that there was a part of the sword that spikes rather than a specific hit, but that's just a complete guess >_>
I guess we can beg Omni to check it out in AR ^_^

I'm pretty sure it's a spike since I don't think it was intended to send the opponent downwards like that anyways.
I need to try doing this when I just feel like doing random **** and see if it spikes my opponent >_>
Otherwise I forget about it and do something more efficient.

In my years of roy, I have noticed that the attack does randomly spike, although not that often. I think it is neither a meteor or a spike, but some type of hybrid glitch thing. Here is, yet again, another example of roys power. :chuckle:

Most definitely a spike. Not one that can be easily used, but it isn't a meteor. For one, it would have given the meteor smash award if it was, Plus, it can send opponents at an angle. Meteor smashes go straight down, and can be recovered from. A spike however, forces the opponent to be unable to act for the duration of the lag. A level 9 comp would have recovered if it still had its double jump.

Not all meteors send people straight down... Falcon's meteor can send people down at a 45 degree angle if you hit them with your chest :D

Meteor smashes usually only redirect the Y axis value and not the X value ones. That's how you get meteor smashes going to the side. But a spike/meteor smash is only a spike/meteor smash if the attack sends them in between -45˚ and -135˚. If it sends them at an angle that is positive it isn't a spike and if it sends them at an angle that is negative but not in that specified region, it's a semi-spike. That's why Link's up+b and Fox's shine aren't spikes IMO.
Although that had little to do with the topic, I wanted to say it.

For those still talking about Roy's up smash... :D
I believe you have to hit with only the fourth hit of the upsmash. That's what someone said a LONG time ago, and I haven't seen it enough times to prove it or disprove it (though I do remember spiking a pichu hitting only that one time). And besides, in order to actually work to kill, your opponent has to be on the edge coming back, and it is very rare they are floating above the stage - everyone sweetspots (and even if they don't, there are better options).

I hit a pichu on very hard with the whole attack at the tip of the blade, and he got meteored
