View Full Version : Returning from the Edge

One of my main problems in a match is executing a recovery that fools an edgeguarder. Granted I know how and when to sweet spot the edge or fly over... but when dangling from a ledge I feel very limited with Pikachu. Ledge hops to neutrals are good but easily countered. Rolling recovery is slow and can be punished. I avoid attack recoveries unless my opponent looks careless. Jumping doesn't help with Pika's poor air-to-ground game... you see where I'm going.

I'm essentially just analyzing my game and looking for my faults and this is one area where I need to improve. Anyone have particular tricks or advice on this?

(BTW i wrote this tired so if i mixed up terms or i sound dumb...whatever)

i don't play pikachu or anything but the best thing you can do is look at all your options. You have the three you mentioned (roll, attack, jump), but im sure there are other creative things you can come up with. Ledge hopping works (you mentioned nair), using empty ledgehops to ledgegrab again. How well would a ledgehopped uair work (i don't know about this). Im wondering if you could ledgehop an up b to fool/evade you opponent although i don't know if this would be too slow or not. If you opponent is waiting for you, you could ledge hop spark shots to keep him away and then move in for a hit. Ledgeslides to sheilds might work but i usually get hit out of this. Well i hope at least one of this suggestions work, if not, keep looking for things that are uniques or maybe another good pikachu player can put ideas up.

Yeah unfortunately I dismissed some of those ideas, I do know theres more options that ledgehop/roll/jump. The ledgehop to upb causes way too much lag. Ledgeslides I'm not so keen on. I'll think on the shocks that might work, I usually only use them before grabbing the edge it may not work.. For a ledgehopped uair... that might work i gotta test it. I'd really have to ledgehop almost touching the ground to hit the opponent... Thanks for the interest though.

I'm really seeking the advice of a seasoned Chu user since I'm actually pretty new.

I haven't been able to time it right, but sometimes I'll let go of the edge, jump out a bit, and do a single quick attack (^b) back to the edge. If you can get it right, you'll have almost no lag. If you think your opponent will have figured you out, you can always ^b over them.

As a Pichu user, I think that one thing that would work is to drop from the ledge and do an up b. With Pichu, I believe you can walljump off the ledge (not sure, I will check sometime tomorrow) by pressing away from the ledge. I also think that you can walljump after you drop off the ledge, but neither of the afformentioned techniques should be nessecary if you can do a good upB. You should trace out a triangle shaped trajectory, ending either on the ground behind your opponent, or on a platform (stage oermitting.) Try this out, and see if it works for you, works wonders for me.

Yes Pichu can walljump...Pikachu cant wtf hes the evolved form! anyways haha...Dude BUHO im gonna kick your *** next time i see you(literally) lol ok i wont but i should...how can you not know how wonderful Pikachus Uair is on the ledge! Seriously its ****ing awesome! Most of the time when you wit somebody with it they get nocked off the stage...it kinda makes the two players switch places...with practice you can control if youd like to land back to hanging on the edge or land on the stage itself...both can lead to a follow up attack to the tail spike...geez ive done this move on the edge against you before..cant beleive you didnt notice

also a ledge hop into a Dair can work really well when time correctly and when L-cancled when nessesary. Thats all for now..Ill put more later if I think of anything else.

I most often do Fair, because of the stupid priority... also if you ff and lc then it's pretty effective as you can go straight into Dsmash or whatever.

doesnt always work

Also if you hit with all the hits and ff and lc you can go straight into a grab as well.

Dair isn't that bad of an idea either because of the priority and the knockback.

Also another option is to wd back onto the ledge as it's pretty fast and safe from the frames of invulnerability.

I'm not sure, but one possibility could be a ledgehopped Neutral B, or Fire one off when your returning. It should give the opponent two things to think about, and can distract them.
