As a tournament organizer, I always say that if you want a tournament in your area and can't find a tournament in your area, then go host a tournament in your area. Just find a venue, and know that we'll all bring TVs and GCs.

I'm going to try for something once school resumes at CSU-East Bay (Hayward) next month, and I'm running MBT7 this coming winter.

I agree. IP...you are Krew?! right?(or is it NoF now?) You are THE Fremont crew. You have exclusive rights to the area. Host a tourney and represent Fremont.

Ey i live in fremont can i join the Krew? Plus, I don't really know how to host a tourney, cuz i've never been to one... It's easier if I go to one instead of host one, see what I mean?

Because there isn't a high concentration of people in a small area, that's why. Holding a tournament is a lot of work, and there's no guarantee that people will come. Plus, there isn't really a great way to get around this area through public transportation unless you happen to live near and are going to somewhere near a BART station.

Even way back when when we had bi-weekly tournaments in San Jose, we never really got more than ten consistant people going to it. I was one of them and I had to drive over an hour to get there, and then over an hour back. That isn't really an option for me now that my car is out of order, and it hasn't been an option for a number of smashers.

On the other hand, I think I'll stir up something for the next smash, whenever that comes out.

Please do so or PM me when you do or anyone else does and I dun't see it. Thx guys... Plus, what exactly is a venue?

jonno... a venue is basically just "a place." ...or dictionary.com says "The scene or setting in which something takes place; a locale"

Anyway, where are they usually held? I guess I just assumed it was always a person's house. It seemed like TG was held at Deezy's house, and the only one I was ever went to was at somebody's house. Where else can it be held for free? I suppose a church might be willing to, but I can't imagine anybody else doing it for free. Do people chip in to pay for "board" of the tournament?

That's why there's not too many tournaments because you HAVE to play for a venue, and that's always a struggle for some to do that. Some arcades will do it, but you probably have to hold a secondary tournament on one of their machines, which is what I've done for the past year now. Churches, high schools, elks lodge places all are viable venues. I've even heard of a Chinese restaurant holding a tournament that had about 16 people in it.

The main thing you have to do is present yourself to the representative of the building that it is good for them to have the tournament in their building, that you won't f-ck their place up. It helps in getting a discount or lowering fees.

I know that when I pay for a venue, I PAY, nobody else does. I think Mattdeezie put up a donation jar to help offset the costs of that racquet center for TG6. Other people say that a portion of their fees goes toward offsetting the costs of the hotel/arcade/church/etc.

When you run a tournament, be prepared to take a hit financially. I have spent minimum $300 for every tournament I've run. Those who don't take a hit financially (without having to win their own tournament LOL) are way better off than I am and I'd love to learn how they do it.

I just want to compete against real people... a venue is a great idea, but my mom is so strict... She'll never let me host a tourney... probably because I'm 13, but still, I'm certain kids my age have hosted tourneys... well, I'd love to do it, but I don't got the cash or the right mom lol

Hahaha....if that's the case then come to Sacramento to smash^_^

or you could hold a smashfest instead of a tournament

well i will be posting very soon about my next tournament, Green Oaks Havoc Tournament 2 in tracy CA. thats only about an hour away from fremont. so try to make it. also you dont have to invest soo much money like game does. he just goes all out for his tournies. actually i was able to pretty much break even for my tournament by selling food candy and sodas and keeping 10% of entrance fees. i however get to use the clubhouse from my mobile home park for free (with 100 dollar deposit) since im a resident. so as long as you know a place u can run it for free or very cheap you can host one without losing any money.

fremont, huh... i live in fremont... and go to San Jose State University.

i've gotta say...i feel kinda old here with 13 year old smashers wanting to play here.

anyway, if you host some sort of smashfest this coming weekend... i'd be able to make it 100%. oh... and jonnobigz, there's a smashfest at South San Francisco if you haven't checked out that thread... seems there's gonna be lots of smashers there.

The South San Francisco I saw like 2 weeks ago, and have been pouting about it ever since. I ask my mom: "Can you take me to a game tournement in South San Francisco?". Can anyone guess her response? Ok, first she said she might let me go if I had a friend coming. Next, after I cought a friend to go with me and told her I had a buddy, she simply replied "No.". I ask why, she says S San Francisco is a bad area. I asked her why, she said it just is. I don't believe that, to me San Francisco is a nice place... She is just so stubborn... Ey, I'm 13, I should be able to go to a tourney 1 hour away, shouldn't I?

Hey PolyCabeza, you're not the only old one here. I'm 23 and still waiting for a birthday on the front page of smashboards that's older than me :) (except for maybe TGII)

But on topic, I live in Napa, which is about an hour from Fremont. I would go to any tournament within a 2 hour range. Heck, I've even been considering about hosting a tournament in my area. I'm 45 minutes from SF, Santa Rosa, and hour from Sacramento, Fremont - it seems I'm right smack in the middle and would have a lot of people coming here. Plus, Napa isn't a "bad" place like parts of SF might be.

Smooth Criminal if you are having a tourney post it so ppl can make plans, I'd probably go.

Cam I live in Novato (I'll be 23 on the 18th this month, I guess you got me beat), if you hold something in Napa I'd probably make it.

Cool! That makes one person who might make it. But I don't have a clue as to how to host a tournament, plus I have to somehow justify it to the wife, which can prove difficult :-D

Do we happen to have a thread on hosting tournaments?

Yeah, I'm in Fremont too, in the crew "Kr3w?!" or "NoF". We're still debating the name.

There was a tournament at Lincoln High School in San Jose, and there was another one at Gamecrazy. I'm thinking about asking the gaming club at lincoln to host a Smash Bros Melee and Halo 2 tournament on a saturday.
