Hello all.
Our smash group recently splashed out and purchased a video capture card for taping smash vids. However, we seem to have a issue with it recording 60 htz. We have fiddled with the VCR and it can tape 60 htz, not very pretty looking, but decent enough, but it won't record (on the computer) any video. We eventually hooked up a cube straight to the computer and tested it out. 50 htz, it runs fine. 60 htz, nope. Nothing. Is there any way we can make it work? We've fiddled with all the PAL-NTSC settings on the importing, camera settings, ect. Perhaps there's a program on the net that may work? We're thinking it may just be the capture card not being compatable with 60 htz.....
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Check the net to see if your capture card supports 60hz... most don't. If it doesn't.. there isn't a software way round it. You really need the hardware support.
If it does.. try using virtualdub (www.virtualdub.org) for capture, I know it supports 60hz capture and it's a pretty fabby free program to boot.
I said I'd write an FAQ on this kinda thing a while ago. Guess I never got round to it.
Note: Virtualdub should only be used to capture semi compressed video.. don't expect the final level of compression to done with virtualdub. You'll have to run it through another level of compression if you don't want a h00ge video.

Varuna, pal runs at either 50 or 60 Hz, meaning frame rate would be either 50 or 60 fps.
N64 games, for instance, run at 25 fps instead of 30, if I'm not mistaken.

What I dont get is if our eyes move at 32 frames per second why do they need to make a game thats 60?

when I bought my capture card I made sure it could do 60hz recording...
The 2 or 3 people I knew who could make vids only could make 50hz vids and not 60hz so I was aware of that problem.

See (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flicker_fusion_threshold) these (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frame_rate) links (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persistence_of_vision). Part of it has to do with CRT technology: because most of the screen is black (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Refresh_scan.JPG) at any given moment, a low refresh rate would mean you'd only be getting partial pictures every 1/30 of a second. By bumping the rate up, the pictures blend together and lessen the effect of the black.

Well, i know Ajp_anton got around it. he could onle record in black &white in 60Hz. however, he fixed it a time ago. I will ask him (or make him post here). myself has a problem to record in 60Hz.
