That's about it. . .there's really no special trick or method to Mario's recovery except for what you mentioned: Cape, down-b, jump, up-b. The order can be varied according to the circumstances--i.e. using the down-b below and near the ledge to get rid of edgeguarders, or using the Cape to deflect projectiles like missles and turnips.
The only other things to remember w/Mario's recovery is to sweetspot the ledge (he has an extremely large ledge-grab range), and you should learn to DI effectively, as it's a skill that few smashers in general have really mastered.
Mario's recovery is rather poor; there's really not much you can do about it.
Except that Mario's recovery is, in fact, quite good. Not Peach level, not puff level, he's more capable than Marth, etc etc... but poor? not at all.
Cape cape and cape, and get fireball timing down, that way you can throw at least one or two fireballs at an edgeguarding opponent. You will steal a lot of "easy" edgeguards this way. Many times you can catch an edge hogger, or force him to get up.
Use the down-b more as a mind game. I don't have crazy enough fingers to gain height with it, but it works very well to force edgehoggers up, or to throw off timing.
When you can, don't use your second jump until you're close to the level. Cape first and use cape + di to get back.
Remember that you can jump and use u-air at the same time without a loss of height or control.
But yeah. Fireballs. They rock at aiding your recovery.

No, DIing with pills is much more effective then caping with Dr. Mario. Caping with Dr. Mario is only useful the first time you use the cape.

Ol magnet hands. never let me down yet.
His grab range on the ledge is so crazy that if you up and B past someone hanging on the ledge and they roll back onto the level, you can still manage to grab the ledge on your fall. (I have done it once). Magnet hands are great.
LOL i know what u mean, mario has God like Magnet grip. i get my friends like that alot, when they are trying to ledge hog. i would say that using the ideas scav listed would be best, doin upair when u jump does not hurt u the fireball protects u etc

my friend does this thing if I go out after him he'll 2nd jump drill, straight to bair before he up Bs and he'll STILL make it.
annoying
What Scav said. Save that second jump till ya really need it. Oh and make sure to only use the Down B while you're above the stage. If not it really then doesn't help any cause you wind up going lower then when you started. If you're close enough to the ledge, dowb B to get the ledgehogger off. Meh I'm just repeating what Scav said -_-
So Scav, when id the Midwest's Mario gonna tangle with East Coast Mario >=)
