I've been having trouble keeping recovery with Luigi from being too predictable. Any advice for getting back without being lagged from a greenmissile or being obvious about going for a ledge sweetspot?

DI! DI up... Everything that hits you off the stage, DI up so that you'll be as high as possible and won't go as far, and thenceforward you'll have plenty of options
Afterwards use a forwardB (do not double jump, use fwdB) to get closer. Then you may double jump or forwardB again, but make sure you don't get too close. If for some reason you need priority, a charged green missile will go through lots of stuff.
Normally you should be able to use your double jump to get to the ledge. Sometimes that won't be true. If you're going to double jump onto the stage consider the following measures. Make full use of Luigi's horizontal warp; he doesn't have to be very close to the ledge to grab it. Make use of his fireball cancel.. double jump toward the stage while covering yourself with a fireball.
When a character like Jigglypuff goes out to hit you, you can use the downB (press B rapidly to suspend yourself in air) for protection, and to gain horizontal distance. DownB is generally good for getting you that extra horizontal distance you might need. It is also good for stalling when people think you are going to upB (peoples forget Luigi can do that).
If someone's grabbing onto the ledge, hit him off it (you can use the full range of upB for this if you're feeling risky.. you can try to dair spike, or fair/uair him into the stage.
Also you can try charging forwardB as if you're going to shoot onto the stage with it (like a.. moron.. or something)... It'll encourage people to walk away, and you always have the option of not going onto the stage.
Another good option for Luigi is airdodging. He has an amazing warp, like I said, and he falls so slowly that you can near-sweetspot the edge with it.
I can tell you more stuff that's useful. For instance, charging the forward B increases its priority and allows Luigi to get through turnips. Sometimes you'll want to just jump onto the stage with a downB or fireball.
But know what the most important thing I said was?
DI The better your DI the better your options..

That's all good stuff I didn't know or even consider. Thanks.
Only thing I'm confused on... What is fireball canceling? I didn't think he had a way to cut the animation lag short.

You can grab the ledge during the animation.

Totally false. Try actually doing it before you profess its reality.

Ok, you can't grab it while you're throwing it, but shortly afterwards (like while your hand is still smoking, which I considered part of the animation) you can.
