does Peach's mushroom actually help her from flying backwards in the air when she's been hit off the stage? I've seen a video where 2 Peach's are fighting and they both perform that maneuver to assist their recovery.

it allows peach to stop then go straight into float, its probably the easiest way to go about this. It's so that peach conserves her double jump.

just making sure, so does this method only conserve her double jump or does it also stop the force that reels her backwards in the air (after she's been hit hard)?
Just wondering if i should always toad to recover first before i press jump, after being sent flying off the ledge.

I know it aids a little bit horizontally to recover, but other than that, I'm just as lost as you, there.
What Toad does:
* It might add a LITTLE bit in horizontal recovery, but at the loss of vertical recovery and this is a fact that CANNOT be changed. Everytime you Toad, you'll always end up a bit lower down than you were before you Toad:ed. So it's like the cape, or Marth's forward + b.
* If you still have your 2nd jump, you can Toad, go into float and still have your 2nd jump, just like Ryoko-sama said.
* If you DON'T have your 2nd jump, you can still Toad and then DI into either an airdodge and up + b. Why that instead of just up + b at once? Less predictable, you get a timewindow to DI first, etc.
* If you DON'T have your 2nd jump but HAVEN'T used up your float yet, you can float after Toad:ing!!!!!

You can also achieve this by holding down and then pressing the jump button, this way you'll also conserve your jump.
you can also just float if you used your jump already, the only reason to use toad is just like wiggling the stick to put yourself horizontal again to do things like airdodges and such (if you fly away twirling, stabilizing yourself can be done by wiggling or doing an aerial). I use uair to achieve this myself and go into floating from that, but if u can learn urself it, wiggling the stick is more effective >.>

Actually i think you recover horizontally on the first and everytime after that you move less and less horiztal, but im not completely sure about this.

Well, only the first Toad really helps you recover at first. The rest kinda hurt her, especially if she does counter.
TiRune, the difference between using Toad and wiggling the stick is that using Toad will be faster.... I think.
Also, you cannot DI upwards to survive 'til the late 100%'s when wiggling the stick. That I why I DI and toad :P.

True. Though it's handy to do when you start coming back or something of the same effect, it's much better to DI the thing. ^_^;;;

The best recovery assistance you can get with Toad is to use him to turn you around into a specific direction. I like to get back on the stage using bairs.
As for everything else, Toad is not efficient for recovery. He can give you a little horizontal distance, but you have to build up your aerial momentum again since he stops it almost completely. To make the most use out of it, you have to Toad then immediately use a DJ, Up+B, or peach bomber to pick up your speed again. The diminishing returns on his "lift" with each aerial use is also a cause for concern.

I must say ive never used toad for recovery but if i remember some experiments with peach she stopped after a certain amount of time with toad out. In other words you cease all your momentum and you get to choose which direction your facing so you can have bair in the direction of the stage. Also like everyone said you can keep your 2nd jump.
Can any 1 comfirm my asumptions??? im not home and wont be for a couple of days so i cant check it out.

I use it when in the far corners because it just gives me a second to think about my approach on coming back. Also the same reasons stated by Yuna, i like to have my second jump and float both handy when approaching the same, and instead of wiggling I want to DI.

No, she does not stop momentum. If you would like, i can put a vid up.
