View Full Version : Why Samus?

I've been a lurker at this site since before SSBM came out. I've never actually felt that I had anything important to contribute to the forums due to the fact that my play was all casual. I just showed my friends the site and they went nuts over the videos Capn' Jack hosts. They're probably at home practicing WD, SH, FF, and L-Canceling right now. Well I've been a Samus player since SSB and I was wondering why others chose her.
Personally I chose Samus at first because I loved the Metroid games. Samus was just awesome. Then I realized I liked her because of her move set. When SSBM came out she was my first pick. I've just stuck with her ever since.
So I was just curious as to why others picked her up as opposed to anyone else in the game.

Great Physics
Great Recovery
Long Reach
Powerful Prjectiles
Large Projectiles
Very Balanced
Powerful to an Extent
So many Glitches that can be exposed.
Good Wavedash
Combo Potential
but I doubt thats what your wondering since you are a vet. but I posted it in case anyone else was wondering.
Anyway, I dont main as Samus, but she feels so right to play as. Its kinda like Mario. they are really balanced so it feels natural to play with. that and you can make others all kinds of mad, ( Jasona does it to me sometimes ), just by keeping me running from projectiles and then poking me with a longer move then mine, ( tilt ) whenever I get near. its good at keeping someones temper up. :chuckle:

same reasons. I played her in SSB because of her dair and bair combo and hoped she would be the same in SSBM. She wasn't and I was sad until I got used to her missles and the new features of the game. I stick with her because she has so many options and I feel like noone really knows them all, as if she is an underdeveloped character on smashboards.
MY story doesn't give SAm the rights she deserves, but I'll tell it anyway.
A few friends of mine and I would play smash just about every day and sort of a joke we "claimed" charactors only the person with "rights" to a charactor could use. This right was earned by being the best with the charactor and could be lost if you were beaten in a one on one with that charactor... get it?
SO... If I lost to you with Link you would have rights to him and I wouldn't be allowed to use him...
Yeah, so any way, At this time my main was Link who I used since the frist Smash but after a long battle I lost the right to use him and almost instinctively picked up samus because of her projectiles.
In the long run I stuck with Samus because of her projectiles, Her weight cupoled with her horriblly long horizontal and vertical come back range, the speed of some of her attacks (ftilt, dtilt, sexkick) and her power ftap dtap bair, not to mention her sparkling personality...

I started useing samus because I used to just do FFA's with 3-4 people and I would sit in the back chargeing and kill people with fully charged beam shots. I stayed with samus mainly because I like useing projectiles. My main characters I use are samus, falco, Ylink and lately jigglypuff so I guess you could call me a projectile *****

UndrDog, that is exactly what I was wondering. Just curious as to why others liked using the spam goddess.
As to being a vet, I wish. :D
I have a LOT to learn still. Damm you L-Cancel... *shakes fist*
the thing i like about samus is there are so many differnat workable playstyles. like, watch, wes and isai's samus'. they look completely different, and they both work great. because of that theres a good way to beat almost every character, like most people think CF counters samus, but when you start using a lot of unexpected wavedashes and stay out of the air unless you're comboing, you do quite well.

i picked samus because she's so easy to use and has a natural tendency to win.

a friend told me to try samus because I wanted to try someone that kind of like Link. Never work out but that was the reason I use Samus even if it was for a while.

thats the thing about Samus. you can watch so many different Samus' and the odds of them handling the same situation the same way. she has many great moves that can work in many different situations. heck, today Jasona just realized the greatness of the uptilt! and still he has been kicking me around. >_< if Jasona didnt main as Samus I would main her. grr...

Well, I have many emotional and tragic reasons for choosing Samus as my main. These reasons are dear to my heart. I chose samus since SSB64 and have used her since. I find I have an emotional bond with samus when i think of the reason for why i chose to play her as my main.
My reason for using samus is mainly because YOU KNOW that the biatch has got some double D's under that armor, and im just trying to hit that.

HugS is the man.
Samus is too hard guys, play Falcon.

Jeez HugS you set that up perfectly, A + for timing.
I didn't like metroid prime... Fusion was good...
I play samus because I learned how to bomb jump. At that time that skill had increased my power 10 fold... Then I learned how to wavedash, seemed easier with Samus. Wavedashing with Samus is fun and seems to impress people regardless of whether or not you're even using it for a purpose. Now with bombs and her crappy throw, I'm having a hard time picking up other characters.

I didn't plan on using Samus as my main char until a friend of mine was using her (this was way before I even he knew anything about the adv. techs. of the game) he's a school friend of mine so I only actually played him once. But something about him controling her made me be like "d*** I never knew a robot could move like that*. Honestly it was like wth, how is he making this heap of junk move like that. I have to tell the truth since that was the first time watching him play against another person (then it was my turn to fight him) I was kinda shook to fight him next. His movements with her were like water. I beat him with C.Falcon and i was like "i'm done no more fights" because i was thinking he'd beat me the next time. After that day I picked her up and thought to myself " i need alot of work to do on her if i want to be that good ".time passed (months) then I finally found out about the adv. techs in the middle of september. Here I am now, Samus unfortunately isn't my main now but I can say she's my go to person. If I can't beat you with C.Falcon then ima go to her.

I know this is lame but................. what other chick sports a big a** "gun", flamethrower, and missile launcher I mean she's the coolest looking character in Smash thus far and not to mention she hassome of the games Nintendo has ever released. I don't see a reason not to choose her.

One word: Metroid.
I've always found it awesome how they succeeded in granting her so much personality; She's always inside a Chozo Power Suit, she rarely speaks, and yet she's become one of the game industry's leading heroinnes despite the fact that extremely few people even knew she was a girl until they beat the original Metroid games. I know certain people who picked up Metroid Prime and had no idea Ms. Aran was female until it was revealed to them, and they liked the game regardless.
The reason I chose her as one of my primary characters initially was because of her sheer coolness; the reason I keep her as one of my primaries is because she just feels right to play as. Her definite skills in-game notwithstanding, she is the epitome of a GOOD, non-stereotypical video game heroinne, and I love her for it.

I just recently started playing as Samus (well about 3 months ago, but recently compared to my "main" characters) and already I love almost everything about her. She's just so good. Great CC'ing, godly projectiles, many many tricks, awesome recovery, excellent wavedash, good range and priority...*sigh*...
Just a great character, and I personally think she is probably the most fun character in the game to play with. I would never give up Zelda as my main character, but I must admit that playing with her as long as I have can get cumbersome since she is a rather repetitive character, and me playing as Samus alot here lately has sort of rekindled my love for this game...not that it was dying or anything, heh.
I love you Samus.

Samus..I can't say she's my main, but whenever I feel like having a truely nostalgic experience, I just pick her up, I seem to be able to handle her better than most other characters I play casually, maybe it's because of her smooth movement and unerring, godlike projectiles, or maybe it's that Metroid was just my first game ever, but yeah, she's awsome, and I can just completely phase the world out, and...enjoy playing with her, instead of considering it a training session. She moves just..so naturally to me. Y'know?..Now I'm gonna stop talking before it seems like I have a Samus fetish..heh...heh..>.>...<.<...*runs*

What's wrong with liking women who nearly always have a robot-like suit covering her?
Samus quickly became one of my best characters just after watching a pro Samus video.

her come back can be easily be messed up somewhat. thats what i think tho.

Care to elaborate on that Elno1? Are you referring to specific character matchups or just in general her recovery is easily messed up?
I was under the impression that samus had one of the best recoveries, if not the best recovery in the game. Correct me if i'm wrong.

02-01-2005, 01:05 PM
yea ill ellaborate i think jiggs can easily float out there and mess her jump up, samething with peach, sheik can needle spam her, thats why i dont think her comback is the greatest.
maybe you are playing the wrong samus players...ya? JIggly does do very well at messsing it up...but a good samus will recover anyways.

yea but you gotta remember not all the samus players are really all that experienced, lol im not including the experienced ones. but it makes ppl hesitant to pick her up.

Shouldn't we assume that the person using samus has enough experience to use her recovery well (not necessarily to its full potential)?
If we are talking about less experienced players, wouldn't samus' recovery still be one of the best, if not the best? Sorry for being confused.

Samus is ironically true to many of her games with the strange 'extras' she has that probably wasn't intended or planned on to work exactly how it does.
For anyone familiar with 'speed runs' and 'sequence breaks'... die hard metroid fans are really big on playing the game out of order.
If you have some time and patience, check out http://www.planetquake.com/sda/other/other.html in the metroid section.
The metroid prime 1:13 (yes, hour and thirteen minutes) no save (played from start to finish without quitting) is particularly impressive for the totally screwy order the person picks up items. This includes getting the Space Jump (double jump) boots 10 seconds after landing on the planet!
Much like the super wave dash in ssbm, the person used an odd trick of the physics engine to get to a spot in the game he wasn't suppose to.
That's the very charm of samus that I respect and delight in watching practice players use. Unfortunately it's also the reason I will never be a very strong samus player... or speed run any of the metroid games... I just don't do her justice and can't seem to train my fingers and timing to manage her bizzare potential.
Elno1
02-02-2005, 12:01 AM
yea but the jiggs could be more experience and cheap her jump, and second, no samuses to a noob wouldnt be the best because they wouldnt know about her down b recovery.
But you still said you don't think samus's recovery is the greatest. Regardless of player skill...the character Samus has one of if not the greatest recoveries in the game. At the very lowest she may come in third...but even third is too low of a number. Honestly...we are looking at the best recovery in the game...jiggly isn't a reason to consider it average or "not that great".

no i think its good if you kno how to use it. Peach can also mess it up, let me think, falco as long as there not under the stage,, in other words ppl can interrupt it with spam, thats not all of it im sure someone would pick sheik over samus, her needle gets through samuses blue ball which is gay as hell, and links arrow on the groud stops it too it can be easily capped by mario im just saying that for a noob itd be easier to just pick a top tier over her. Sorry if its out of order.

im just saying that for a noob itd be easier to just pick a top tier over her.
This is your opinion right? Or are you saying it's a fact? IMO, the typical samus noob has the advantage over a typical fox noob because I think samus is easy to pickup, at first, and fox requires much technical skill. But this is all relative on how each person thinks a noob will behave in certain situations.
All I'm saying is determining the best recovery for noobs is a little absurd because who is to say what a noob knows and what he or she does not know. If you say he or she will not know how to use the bomb recovery, I can say he or she will not know how to double jump.
However, it is easier to separate better recoveries from others when using them to their full potential.
I'm getting a little off topic... Samus' recovery ownz:D
Elno1
02-02-2005, 01:21 PM
i knew how to double jump and until i read in here i didnt kno about her bomb jump, i guess it depends on the person but i just think they pick up sheik cause her attack recovery is insane (as in her fair).
Again, regardless of how much a player knows...The character known as samus has one of if not the greatest recoveries in the game. Doesn't matter if a noobie knows this or not...we are talking character trait not player skill. Samus has vertical and horizontal covered exceptionally well. Edge guarding a samus is quite the task.
1. Send her far.
2. Stop bombs somehow
3. If you manage to get past that...then stop her second jump somehow
4. If you get past that...stop the grapple...however the samus may decide to use it (beam cancel, beam jump, grapple, sweetspot etc)
5. After this is done...then MAYBE you have a chance at getting an edgehog, unless she's at a favorable position to start bombing again.
Dont know...seems to me that samus has the most options for recovering as a character...regardless of the player's skill.

Because nearly everything I was about to say about Samus has already been said I'll say that i play Samus because she's underrated and yet has no truly exploitable weakness. oh and her sex kick is *truly* unmatched.:D

There's more then what I'm already facing against Samus 0_o
Only way to edgeguard Samus is to hope the Samus messes up and gives you an opportunity. If you leave Samus off the side of the stage they aren't going to die from not being able to get back. From what I've learned edgeguarding Samus requires you make sure she doesn't have the opportunity to recover. Otherwise best you can do is edgehog (force to use up+b or grapple) and then hope they mess up. You haven't appreciated her recovery until you have to edgeguard against it.
Peach and Jiggs recoveries are just annoying because they float above you. You don't even edgeguard those because they aren't going to end up the low usually.
Samus's recovery = best recovery IMO
Yes I agree 100% rebel. Samus's recovery is the best...in my opinion as well. And "the red sparrow", samus isn't underrated. People know she owns. And she does have very exploitable weaknesses. Ill give you a hint...forget about wavedashing and sidestepping...try rolling to dodge attacks :). I only m entioned one but it's just to prove she isn't perfect. Though samus is still as close to perfection as it gets...samus owns so much. Too good....shiek who?

If Samus had a less laggier grab and a faster roll dodge. She be top tier! lol. Really, their hardly isnt anything Samus cant do. Thats why I picked her as a competitve character cause she's so useful. I also believe she has the best recovery in the game. She can shoot projectiles while recovering with a bomb jump... its an unexpected surprise and gets your opponent to focus on something else besides edgeguarding Samus.
