Hi, I'm new to these forums, and this is as good a place as any to introduce myself!
I'm from Ottawa, Canada and I've been playing SSBM for a while (I got it about 6 mos. after it came out and have been hooked since). I came looking for a place to discuss SSBM, and I found out that this is apparantly a very competetive game! All these terms and acronyms I've never heard of make me feel like a real bad player! For a few years the only competition has been a friend who's as good as me, and my brother, who is about as good as my cat. I wish I had a tournament or something in the Ottawa-Toronto-Montreal area. In researching these new terms, it turns out that I use their functions all the time when I fight, I've just never had names for them (IE: Directional Influence, etc). Still, I can tell that I have a lot to learn. I don't know how to rate my skill level. I can usually whoop any of the 1P-Modes on Very Hard, if that means anything.
I am a natural Pikachu player, dating back to the days of SSB. My tactic then was to spam the grab. Now in SSBM, with Pikachu's grab sucking, I have developed into a real hit-and-run player. Usually striking from a distance before charging the opponent when their % gets high. (I like to think I have perfected the art of spamming Pikachu's projectile move!) Although, one thing I can do well is juggle the opponent with the Big Thunder, knowing exactly where to leap and send another bolt. I prefer 1 vs.1 matches, as I am terrible when I get double-teamed. I hate items (they ruin the match!). And I prefer the plainest, flattest platforms possible (Final Destination all the way!)
But why am I talking about that? This is a Peach forum! Well, even though I stayed loyal to the electric rat for ages, my friend had branched out into specializing in three characters and I got bored with Pikachu. I wanted a second character. I experimented with Marth and Shiek, but they seemed too 'good', if you know what I mean. Like it seemed as if anyone could pick them up and master their speed. So I explored DK (can't jump), Jigglypuff (good, but too light) and others. What I really wanted was someone I could abuse my hit-and-run playstyle with. I started trying Peach because I was fond of her recovery mastery and I loved the turnips. I played with her a bit, still experimenting with others. I know now that Peach is a close-combat melee fighter, but I still used her as a hit-and-run artist. This meant loads and loads of turnips and abusing her awesome dash move. I eventually decided she was the one and started playing her, becoming steadily better. However, I was still a bit confused as to how she was to be correctly played. That is where this forum comes in.
I found this forum a couple days ago and learned some stuff about Peach and SSMB in general. Apparently Peach's down-smash is godly?! Ok, didn't notice that before! The C-stick is better than normal smashing? So it is... Well, I read the noobie guide and am steadily incorporating my new knowledge into my Peach game. As you can imagine, it is difficult to change my style and go against instinct. I know I must abuse her down-smash but it is not a very well ranged attack, and close combat is not part of my style. However, I have been forcing myself to use the down-smash (with the C-stick!) and have actually improved in the past few days (although my only competition most of the time is level-9 computers). I still abuse the turnip to no end, mercilessly bombarding my enemy with stitchfaced veggies. It's a whole new game when I play against my friend (unlike computer players, he DOESN'T walk right into my attacks), I actually have to use strategy. I always try to slip a Peach Bomber or Toad into my game. They're both bad, but the best part about them is that they are so unexpected!
Anyway, sorry about the novel! I guess I just wanted to introduce myself to the forum. I feel I will be spending a lot of time in the Peach and Pikachu forums and hope to learn a lot! It would be cool if someone could point me in the right direction. I'm not a newbie, but I have sort of been isolated from the rest of the SSBM world!
