View Full Version : Rate my Kirby

I've started to pick up Kirby because, well after seeing Snow Pink's signature. That made me think about my favorite video game character of 3rd and 4th grade. Ah, the good days. Now I'm making a Kirby flash movie + I've started practicing with him and am making him my main character! Here's how I play with him. (I've never read any pro Kirby FAQ or anything...):
- Shuffled D-Airs into D-Smashes or grabs work well for me
- D-Throw to D-Smash works well against non-floaty characters
- Wavedash supported hammer smacks or F-Smashes help a lot
- I use D-Air to spike them
- A rock is used only when I use mind games
- I don't CC a lot, but I dodge a lot
- N-Airs is an important defensive attack, although I believe that Kirby is offensive
- Kirby's B-Air is powerful, so I use it to edge-guard, a ledge hop attack, or when I feel like using it
- Kirby's U-Air is powerful, so I use it to KO more than to juggle
- Kirby's U-Smash comes in handy once in a while...
I will post videos of myself, later.

Eh, it would be very hard to rate somebody on just the things they say alone. I'm gonna have to wait for those videos before I can pass any judgement.
On a similar note, vids of my Kirby will be up soon after Christmas... yay.

Before I put a video up, I want to know the answer to these two questions. (I might get a video of me fighting someone really bad though...)
Are my tactics different from most Kirby players' tactics?
Are they good enough to be able to be used in competitive play?

For the first question, yes. But just because there aren't that many Kirby players to begin with, so everybody has their own style ^_^
As for the second, I still say that that has to come fom vids. But from a lot of what you're saying, I see a lack in one big thing: speed. Wding into a hammer or fsmash would be very hard to pull off against an experienced player just because of the windup and end lag. Way too easy to get through. Same goes for dthrow to usmash. Most people will easily be able to tech away easily before you ever have time to get the usmash off. And even then, if they DI correctly, the affect would be minimal.
But like I said before, it depends on seeing what you can do. Explaining different things just gives an idea of how you play Theory SSBM, but how you utilize yourself in battle can be completely different.

You're right. I was playing my brother the other day and I don't remember using some of the combos I mentioned.

Do you use tilt attacks? Kirby's are some of the best in the game especially his forward tilt which is fast, rangy and pretty powerful. Back air is great and forward air is alright. Kirby is good at combos or attacking quickly then defending so try to stick to the fast moves rather than hammer or smashes. Just use them now and then when the chance arises.

I Dair a lot into SG Dthrow into tilts or D/U smash...
WoK: wall of Kirby....lots of SH Bairs are good from backwards WDing while CCing. Ya know?
I don't use Hammer...laggy...
Tilts, lots of tilts....Forwards and down mostly. Sometimes an up tilt from a down throw...
Up throw into Uair...
Ledge Grab>Ledge Fall>Uair.
Uair KO's a lot, lots of Sextupple spikes.
Machine gun punch(A A A)...just for the heck of it.
Suck(B) for powers, powers are fun. Haha...
I speak good.
I will watch your video when you put it up, you sound pretty standard. Forward Smash and Hammer aren't that great though...Kirby isn't as complicated as I would like him to be, that's why I rarely post on this board.
There really isn't that much to talk about as far as Kirby goes...sorry my post is so choppy...I didn't want to take the time to explain everything. If you don't understand something I said...ask. We play fairly similar I think.

I stopped using Hammer. I'll use it when Bowser misses an F-Smash or something, which will happen when the sequel for SSBM comes out.
Is the kamikaze technique okay with using Swallow? I like to Swallow enemies while in the air when they're close to the ledge, then keep
falling down. People I've played never got out, but I want to double-check to see if it's possible to get out of.
I should use Kirby's tilts a LOT more.
His B-Air is great.
U-Air is always a good KO move, especially against those big lugs.
Now, if my friend will finally allow me to video camera us playing...

The swallowing stuff is covered here--yes, anyone can get out of it with enough frantic button mashing, but you don't have to kamikaze when falling off the ledge...if you press the x or y fast enough (right before and while you're off the bottom of the screen), you will be able to jump back up towards the ledge after they died inside you! Free, cheap KO if they don't struggle enough. Or you can spit them out on the way down into some place they can't recover from.
