hey- im practicing shinedashing or waveshining- whatever term refers to wavedashing out of a shine by using the jump for the wavedash to cancel the shine. Anyway, I can easily do it when I'm away from the enemy, but as soon as I do it next to the enemy, it just about NEVER works! I swear I'm doing the exact same motion as when I do it alone, but it gets stuck and all I do is turn to the opposite direction without the shine being cancelled.

So my questions are- 1) what is the actual term for this technique? 2) is there an explanation for why it's harder when im next to my opponent or is it just me? 3) any tips on practicing this tech?

Thanks for your help

1) It's called a waveshine.

2) It's just you. And me. I have the same problem as you do, though it doesn't happen very frequently. I suppose its just the higher propensity of screwing up when it comes to actually performing the technique on an opponent. I can waveshine into an usmash most of the time (read, most), but I just can't do infinites (drill shine... etc)

3) Sit down and just practice. It may sound like a banal thing to do, but hey, it's just the best way to get it done IMO. After I spent some time just doing it at vs. matches and in training mode, my waveshining improved but up to now it's not perfect. (screw MoF =P) It's like how I learnt the timing for Samus' SWD.

Edit : Dang, I thought you were talking about Fox's waveshine. Pardon my misinterpretation... But the stuff I said for questions 1 and 3 are correct =)

Yeah, actually everything you said applies, besides 2) :p

I don't kow why but I have a MUCH easier time with Fox's waveshine than Falco's, however I have been practicing it a lot lately because it's a great way to avoid predictability. Most people would just expect you to jum out of your shine, but short hopping or waveshining can trip them up sometimes.

EDIT: well i've been practicing and i found out that when shining next to an opponent, you have to shove the joystick totally up to JC the shine as opposed to lightly moving the stick up when away from the oppnent. So I tried using y intead of up on the joystick and it has made it so much easier to waveshine.

So now my new question(s) is: Should I stick to using y in order to waveshine or should I keep trying the joystick? I read somewhere that when JCing the shine to double jump, it is always best to use the joystick because it is faster. So if use y to waveshine, would it be alright to use y to JC->jump as well or should I use the joystick if I'm going to JC->jump?

I just want to know what ppl tend to use to waveshine and JC->jump.

Fox and Falco take a different number of frames to jump. 4 for Fox and 5 for Falco. You might be used to Fox's timing, so are WDing too early with Falco.

Also, it's no faster to JC with the stick or x/y some people just find it easier to use buttons for consistancy and easier to use the stick for speed.

You use the shine, then JC it, then quickly airdodge downwards and to the side to wavedash.

I don't really get what the point of it is. If you already start it up, it won't the damage. Or does it keep doing damage while you wavedash? I'm confused.

You let the shine hit them, thus doing the damage and it's knockback, and then you wavedash/jump out of it which cancels the lag from the shine. That way your aren't left sitting on the ground waiting for the shine animation to end, therefore letting you keep attacking and comboing. Waveshining and shine JC'ing in general is a must learn to play with either Fox or Falco.

use it when say you hit someone with the shine, but someone else is about to ariel kick you.

Or, for something that might happen in an actual match, you can wave shine them off the edge with fox or into an upsmash.

OR
you could shine someone and then waveshine left or right then attack faster
