When I do what I think are WDs with Marth I always have my shield up at the end of the dash. Am I doing something wrong? Holding L/R too long? Can anyone explain the difference between shield dashing and wave dashing?
It's crucial to Marth's game and I want to master it properly.
For wavedashing.. you're simply holding the L/R button too long, press and release it as fast as possible, I had the same problem back then, you'll get used to it.

It's helpful, but I wouldn't say it's crucial. Don't focus solely on one new technique that you hear everybody talking about - Instead, try and implement all of your attacks effectively. Focus too much on one thing, and your opponent will realize it, and use it against you.

I don't wavedash from a shield to often, but when I do it usually ends with a free grab.
If you ever shield a f-smash or a laggy move, you can wavedash from the shield and grab your opponent. 99% of the time it's a free grab. This works for a lot of characters, but more so with Marth, because his grab range is insane :-P.
Don't forget his WD range.. ^^

I've always wondered how to stop my friend's marth who always uses fsmash. Even when I shield, I would be too far to counterattack, but then I saw Mike. C do it to him like 30 times when they played. This is a very good technique (wd out of shield after laggy attack from opponent).

What are you guys saying to do by WDing out of a shield? I under stand that WDing immeadiatly takes you out of a shield but I am usually to far away for a jump canceled grab and, when i WD towards him after his laggy attack I usually just blow right past him.
When I WD and try to press z too early it brings up my shield instead of making my char grab.
Then just keep shielding and use A to grab..
