View Full Version : Gah! I just can't hit that Rest!

Well, I've gotten better with Jiggs, that's for sure, but there's still one problem I have: using Rest as a KO move. Are there any ways to use Rest as a KO move easily?

"1. Short hop a back aerial (so that you hit them) -> L-cancel -> up tilt and rest. If their on higher percentags you may have to short hop after the up tilt. You can attempt to up tilt into a rest without the back aerial although I think using the back aerial flows into the up tilt easier and isn't as obvious.
2.Pound through your opponent and DI backwards into them and rest. I usually find pounding upwards and DI ing backwards works the best.
3.All the pillow rest combos on breakable stage objects. Not too useful to be honest.
4.Up throw -> rest. Best against fast fallers eg falco and fox. You may also have to short jump upwards then rest if their on higher percentages. Go into training and practice this, find out what percentages you need to jump and when not to.
5.Crouch cancel the opponents move eg falcos down aerial and rest . Abit tricky to get used to however.
6.Run and a -> up tilt -> rest. Only on low percentages.
7.Down aerial -> l-cancel -> rest. Not very reliable, mostly used on larger characters eg Bowser, DK and Yoshi.
8. Learn to rest into ANY lag you see eg ganondorfs down and b ( that big kick along the floor) rest into him at the end, they won't be doing that again! any up and b moves used for recovery that aren't sweet spotted onto the ledge. Includes ganon/capt.falcs, samus' etc. If their Samus and they attempt to use that up b on you as a move or out of their shield and miss rest them. Most B moves lag, just hone your reflexes to short hop into them and rest.
9.Shield a laggy move -> short hop into them -> rest . eg Your playing a forward smash happy Marth ? play a few mind games, find out when he uses the forward smash. Tempt him into doing , shield, short hop and rest. Same goes if the Marth uses the counter move, tempt him into using and rest them.
10.Rest is perfect for mind games and in higher level matches it becomes a greater benefit as a mind game tool itself. Once you land a rest against your opponent he will be watching out for the move again. This allows you to manipulate what he is going to do, especially if you use the same rest combo but instead of finishing with a rest ( as he will most likely be watching for it and DI ) simply pound him several times instead. Mix it up so he doesn't know whats coming."

Here are two very unused, very difficult, but very awesome Rest setups to use:
1. Dashrest- Simply dash into a Rest. Don't do a dash attack, just run into them then hit the Rest. I can usually do it coming from the right but coming from the left is a bit harder for me.
2. Waverest- Yes, you can wavedash into a Rest. It's hard, but it's worth the effort.
Both of the above are easily worth mastering if you're willing to devote the time necessary to do so.

Wavedash to rest is my favorite set up, and it can work on just about any character. Fun stuff, and not really all that hard once you get it down. Just takes a few minutes practice.

Or you could do the drill and L-cancel and then rest

If you're playing against someone who rolls alot, space yourself. if they roll and stop on you, hit rest fast. works on some sheik players because they roll so **** much.
up+b cancel on edges --> rest. just don't miss the rest attack :)
someone else said crouch cancelling, but it works very well. especially against characters like sheik, b/c her comboing ability relies on that running forward A alot.
Wall of Pain: a lot of times while repeatedly doing your bair, you'll find times where you do it, and your opponent wasn't pushed to far away. (this sometimes happens with fair and pound also). if you have just attacked and see that your opponent is sitll right next to you, do your rest attack.
there's a good example of it in a Tetsuya video.. he was puff against yoshi i think.

My best bet when I'm puff is drill to Rest, because unless they shield roll out of it you'll be in them. Any other time I usually end up Resting after I'm pushed out of someone (Like W-dashing to Rest, cause my wave is weak.)

Drill to rest is TERRIBLE! I don't see how anyone would want to rely on that for their primary rest set up. It's very unreliable, and the timing is so weird anyway. I never use this set up.

I guess u don't time it well then jesusfreak, it's got nothing to do with luck, it's got everything to do with timing and spacing ;)

Actually, I know perfectly well how to the drill to rest. It's just the fact that it can be sheilded or DIed that makes me shy away from it. I already said that WD to rest is my favorite set up, but I also use throws, pound, and utilt.

i think that the most important rests are done off of laggy attacks. as posted by neophos in his number 8 option, they are very useful. my bro is ganon and after the first week of me mastering rest, he quickly stopped using just about all of his b attacks. to truly master rest, hitting laggy moves is one of the most important steps :p
