I don't know what options Mario has for edgeguarding. So far I use varied techniques such as fireball spamming, the cape, edgehog to bair, downsmash, etc. I am sure there are much more/better options than some of these though. Any ideas?

cape is always a good choice or edgehog and then jump of and bair them and jump back to the ledge. Pretty devasting move if you ask me.

I'm pretty sure you get the furthest from the stage (while still being able to survive of course) by jumping at the opponent facing forwards, then after the peak of your jump cape backwards to turn yourself around, then bair, then double jump and up b to make it back to the stage. It'll let you reach characters like Link and Samus before they can get too low for you to hit them, and works well as a surprise tactic, since no one thinks you can go out that far.
I know it works with Doc really well, but I haven't really tried it with Mario, but I'd think it would still work.
Also, against characters that have a good deal of lag after their up b (Sheik, Marth, etc.), edgehog to make them land on the satge, then simply get back up and back throw them during the lag. Repeat if necessary. Not only does it work well, but it's treally frustrating for your opponent to be thrown off time and time again.

Go on the ledge and press down and then jump and then back air and you should land right back on the ledge, it works great.

I'm a former Marth player who is trying to learn Mario/Dr. Mario for a good 2nd and I enjoy that tactic the most when I edge gard. I think Mario and Dr. Mario have great b-air moves.

i play doc as my main, this is what i've found is useful
you should always cape falco/fox, and ganon/falcon, and sometimes mario/doc/luigi because when u cape their up-b's, they get shot the other way. oyu can also cape fox/falco/luigis >-b if u get really good at it.
get on the edge and back cape when the come up with thier up b. its great for marths but it has to be timed. i think it might be useful against shiek when she aims for landing and not the edge(sorta like a alteration orf the CJ caping shiek off the stage when she went for the landing) but i havent had a chance to try it out. other than that nair works well, and the mother of all back air.

The pills stop the first part of sheik's tripple jump, so when edge guarding her, spam it up. :D

I'm not sure if anyone said this but I think the bair off the platform is best. it send them off the stage into a roll, (usually) and forcing them into a tumble causing them to use their 3rd jump. If you do it off of the platform then you'd have your second jump to go back and edgehog so they surely can't get back.
*EDIT* remember if you edgehog then do back air you won't have your second jump, and depending on how far you actually travel trying to connect with your bair your up b may be worth nothing trying to come back

fireballs mess up Ness BAD... if he lost his 2nd jump... even with it he´s in some trouble.

Oh... and another thing is. you can usually cape to d smash or f smash. The cape sorta pops them up (some characters more than others) so depending on who pops up more would depend on which smash you use (use f smash more than all).

jump out with a n-air fast fall and recover back on stage or
edge hog jump into b-air or n-air
dont forget to cape too
