hey guys im new to the forum.. i dl this vid of samus doing the grapple in the air and the canceling into a jump.. how is this done?
sometimes shes doing a beam insteasd and then jumps..
i tried looking around on the threads.. ppl are talkin bout more advanced stuff like bomb grapple jump.. which im not sure i even understand wat they are saying.. thanks
Umm, i think you are talking about....when you drop a bomb in the air, you can air dodge into it then use your grapple, once the bomb blows up, the grapple animation is cancelled and you can immediately do an arial move. Or are you talking about when you airdodge, press up, and grapple at the same time in the air so that you end up reaching heights higher than your up B could take you?

im talkin bout the second one u mentioned.. can u explain further how that acutally works.. do i press (UP + R) and Z at the exact same time?? i dont get the concept of wat is happening there.. and then do i press jump again to get that boosting jump i see in the vids.. samus goes flying high in the vids.. the vids she looks like she just hooks onto the platform while falling.. then boosts way up high.. thanks for the input btw

its called beam cancelling, you use L or R to air dodge then immediately after hit a while still holding L/R, it cancels the air dodge immediately but you'll keep the upward momentum of it longer than you would if you just stayed in your air dodge, its a really sweet trick, but barely ever useful. it may give better vertical distance than screw attack, but you have no horizontal, and if its a stage like fd, where the sides of the level extend down past the edge, you could just use the grapple on it normally and flip up, then screw attack. unless you're backward, but then you couldn't grab the edge, where as with screw attack you could turn around at the beggining of the move. i guess what i'm trying to say is, i don't use it. its fricken cool, but not good for recovery
Edit: i forgot to mention, yeah, you gotta hold up the whole time i think, atleast for sure you gotta air dodge upward, i'm not CERTAIN if it matters after the airdodge.

What Crash said is basically correct, but let me just add a few things:
To beam-cancel, you have to air-dodge upwards--this is what gives Samus that vertical boost. Once you air-dodge upwards, immediately cancel it into the grapple (w/ A or Z, whatever suits you), and the grapple beam will latch onto the edge, snap away, and send Samus tumbling vertically upwards.
I'd argue w/ Crash, in that Beam-Cancelling might be very useful if you can consistently pull it off. If you beam-cancel close enough to the sides of the stage, you'll immediately grab onto the ledge. Otherwise, if you go above the ledge of the stage, you can use any attack you want--preferably a fully charged beam shot, or an ANA/AFA--which puts pressure on edgeguarders, and gives you a better shot at a successful recovery.
The only problem w/ this is that beam-cancelling won't work on all stages--it works on FD, Fountain of Dreams, and Battlefield, on other stages it might or might not work.
btw, all of this info is from Shoot the Works/Testament, a veritable Samus guru; props to him for teaching me this stuff.
Agreed, beam cancel can be useful at times. It can be used to reach the high platforms on Kongo Jungle 64 when being forced to use your up b to grab the ledge. On that stage, it can be way to risky to go straight for the ledge when your edge guarding opponent is ready.

If you beam cancel close to the edge there's a good chance that on curved levels, such as FD and FoD, you'll simply be too close for it to come out, flying upwards and unable to do anything, much less grab the edge. Flying up with a sex kick or fair isn't bad, but again, the beam cancel often proves unreliable.
