I'm having trouble finding where to place Doc and Mario's d-air. Even with an L-cancel it doesn't seem to combo well, since it pushes the opponent up into the air where they can simply stop you with a sex kick or other quick aerial. So far the only real use I have found for it is as a method of returning to the stage from high up, to stop an opponent from juggling me. Mixing up the fall speeds can help you nick them with the move and get you back to more even footing, but I can't seem to find any other place to use it. Any suggestions?

I actually use Mario's ADA pretty often. . .but then again, I don't play against humans, so my analysis might be sort of suspect.
Against grounded opponents, the ADA links pretty well into fast attacks if L-cancelled (i.e. similar to Fox's drill combos). Following up an ADA w/ a grab, d-smash, or u-tilt is usually pretty good. The thing is, if you're shffl'ing the ADA, you want to DI so you eventually end up behind them as it makes it difficult for your opponent to counter it.
Against aerial opponents, the ADA combos really well since it drags opponents into the attack; following it up immediately w/ an AUA while still airborne is pretty good.
Sometimes when trying to get back on the stage from an edgehogging state against an edgeguarding opponent, I might shorthop up into a L-canceled ADA+d-smash.
Other times, if I'm going up against a opponent who likes jumping or shffl'd attacks, I might approach/retreat by doing a full-jump, rising ADA, fastfall+aerial wavedash forward or back, depending on the situation; it prevents an overly aggressive opponent from approaching (usually).
That probably didn't answer your question at all. . .
The only problem w/ Mario's ADA is that it sometimes has arbitrary horizontal knockback, pushing the opponent beyond grab range, while other times, it has no horiz. knockback at all, allowing for easy ADA+grab combos. . .does anyone know what causes this, or is it completely random?

Well, I know that by falling into the ground before the final hit of the attack will knock the opponent back slightly. Not very comboable though.

I doubt its random..but even if it IS by control, somehow..i still think mario's ADA is a pretty crappy move, since its so hard to follow up after it.
Doc's on the other hand is alot better, cuz it doesn't move them at all..u can always rely on it to lead into a grab/downsmash/ Jab
