View Full Version : Writing the ultimate Peach Guide

The guides on Gamefaqs aren't near as good as they should be and there aren't any FAQ's around here that go into depth of how to play Peach either (besides the newbie guide).

So, here's my idea:
Why don't we all band together and write a collective guide to post here (and hopefully get it made a sticky) and on GameFAQs? There'd be a few people (volunteers, the more, the merrier) actually writing the FAQ (if these have different views of different strategies and attacks, it'll say "XXX says: ......" followed by "XXX says: ......" and "XXX and XXX says: ......", etc. This way, the FAQ-reader would get different views on everything as well, much better than just one person writing a FAQ.

Then, everyone else could suggest changes, additions, easter eggs, random useless things that are fun to do to add to the FAQ. And then we'd revisit it until it's complete and everyone agrees it covers everything you can do with Peach.

What do you guys say? ^^

TiRune

Well, if you can get this started nicely and you can get other good peach players to join, I'll help out ^_^.

Yuna
10-05-2004, 01:06 PM
I'll start by making up names for all of her attacks ^^. I'll hold polls where people can vote for what names they want for them :)

TiRune
10-05-2004, 01:37 PM
dude... every attack has a name already. don't make stuff up since it looks n00b -_-'

Yuna
10-05-2004, 02:33 PM
They do? I still haven't seen a good names for the smashes. Usmash and Dsmash doesn't sound very good. And are there official names for all of the attacks? 'Cause I haven't found any list yet.

CRF
10-05-2004, 04:53 PM
There are only official names for the B moves; however, using randomly concocted names for all the attacks is confusing to the reader and a general waste of time.

TWP
10-05-2004, 05:26 PM
Not a bad idea if we could get it off the ground...If you need input, I can provide just a little bit from my little expierence...

and yeah, I agree with CRF. Just using "nair" and "neutral a" is better than saying "twirly spinny thingy" and "SLAP !!1!"

Yuna
10-05-2004, 05:36 PM
No, I wouldn't use them in the FAQ as terms. I would just name them funny and fitting names and then call them bair nair, etc. :)

I'll also be doing the FAQ in HTML so I can colorcode it and change fonts.

SuperDoodleMan

The names are in the official Nintendo strategy guide (which I happen to keep around for pretty much only that reason).

A - Royal Slap, Double Royal Slap

Dash A - Lady Push

F tilt - Can-Can Kick
Up tilt - Crown Bash
D tilt - Elegant Sweep

F smash - Peach Swing
Up smash - Pirouette
D Smash - Double-Edged Gown

N-Air - Princess Twirl
F-Air - Crown Smack
B-Air - Flying Hip
U-Air - Floating High Kick
D-Air - Stiletto Kick

Grab attack - Heel Stomp
F throw - Royal Slap
B throw - Iron Hip
U throw - Gut Punch
D throw - The Royal Treatment

B - Toad
^B - Peach Parasol
vB - Vegetable
>B - Peach Bomber

Something else that should be considered is Ross' online frame guide (still way under construction) which could be uniquely helpful. Since the guide is in HTML, it could have links to the relevant things. Here's the sample:

http://www.smashinfo.com/peach/fair/index.html

While I'm at it, I'll post what I have so far of my Peach frame chart. I made it in notepad, so it might not translate perfectly. This and other frame charts (and the terminology guide) are available on the DC++ hub.

Because Peach's second jump has a dip
at the beginning, she can land while
doing it, but instead of her landing
animation, it will go to her waiting
animation, which means there is no
lag, excepting that if you press any
button on the frame you land, Peach
will go to her landing animation.

These numbers assume a short hop, as
it is easier and more effective

When you press jump : when you land

1st frame in the air: 1 frame later
2nd frame in the air: 3 frames later
3rd frame in the air: 5 frames later

Moving forward increases dip SLIGHTLY
and may reduce above numbers by 1.
Moving back may decrease dip SLIGHTLY
and may increase above numbers by 1

I was unable to achieve 100%
consistency except with no movement
-------------------------------------

Air Dodge

landfallspeciallag: 10 frames

Ground dodge

Roll

Dash becomes Run at frame 16
Dash turnaround: 24 frames
If you quit mid-turn, it lasts 26!

Turn-jump threshold: 12

P.S. if any of these is wrong, let me know and I'll double check it.

**bows** you tha man superdoodleman... still can't thank you enough for the djc info, it's actually working :P

nyways, there ya go, all the names and information. at least that's a start of the faq. you need to gather the world's best peaches to make this a decent idea... Mike G (bike), ryoko, quetzecoatle (meh, stupid name, it's an aztec god anyways :P) and people like that. If some of those participate I'll spend some time on it 2 ;)

Quetzalcoatl

It's Quetzalcoatl and its not stupid =(
I'll be free in about a months time and on holidays so i suppose I can help during then. I would particularly like to do an in depth section on turnips and perhaps TiRune and I can work together on a small section for PAL users (how the differences can effect peach's game). Otherwise I still won't mind helping out in other aspects of her game.
Also things like ryoko's animated gif examples of how to make use of the fsmash would be a great idea. Also having links or recommendations to videos such as SDM's float canceling 2, wall bombing, trick videos etc.
If we are going to do it, then get some action happening, don't just say we should do it and then never get it done. Do something to motivate others to do something too.

Super Doodle Man's frame data is a great start with some very interesting information, well done to him =).
I'd also like to say that I think we can move away from writing a guide for noobs on how to play peach and really delve deeper into what she can do.

I'm gonna start writing my FAQ today. As soon as there's enough for a beta-version, I'm gonna upload it for you guys to evaluate ^^.

Keep in mind that I'm still learning, so I don't in any way claim to know all about Peach. But I still want to make this the ultimate Peach guide ^^

SDM:
Thanks for that info ^^.

Quetzacoatl:
Although I'm still learning, that's what I intend with this FAQ. :) I'll go around bothering the top Peaches in the hub for input and info, of course ^^.

It would be interesting if we could do a turnip section where we (read = you/them) first speculate on algorithms, the non-random randomness of the game, etc. (I'm NOT a math major, so I'll stay away :P). Then a whole bunch of people could do a 1000-turnips experiment and then make a chart of how many they got of each turnip/item.

Also, I'll need someone with a capture card to take certain snapshots for me to illustrate combos, attacks and such. *looks in SDM's direction :P*

TiRune

In the short future, I can get my hands on a cam for a short period of time and I'll record some stuff.. mayb I can even make a mini peach training vid with it.

the top peaches are just the people I stated, and aztec, its not a stupid name (I like the aztec culture) but it's annoying to write :P

I have enough time during the holidays also, and the PAL version difference seems like a good idea. mayb with a very thorough guid we could even get more people to play peach and push up the level of play of every peach who visits smashboards :P

SDM, what about the backward turnip throw from the ground?
You know, the one that actually puts the turnip farther than a forward toss.

The guide is going to be extremely wordy if I'm part of it. I've studied Peach too much in my time outside of frame data.

Ryoko and I have had some discussion and have decided that the best way to approach this is to make a website with links taking you to in depth sections on Peach. Here is the suggested layout:

TiRune
10-07-2004, 02:55 AM
I think the list is complete, didn't find anything that was missing :P. If we do encounter something missing we can add it @ the end anyways.

what do you want the general idea of the guide to be? will we add a piece of our own to every topic so that everyone can read different views on moces and matchups or should we divide the topics... my guess is that the lists for comboes, techniques and moves should just be divided for the information and everyone can alter it when we're working on the guide (so that we get parts written by 3-5 peach players). things like the matchups, usefulness of the moves and such should have a part for every author.

Yuna

Quetzacoatl:

That sounds very good. Can I skip my guide and join your project? ^^ As I plan to stick with Peach and want to both improve my own playing and other apiring Peaches'.

Quetzalcoatl

Okay, I have completed the navigation for everything that i have listed down and it took a really really long time, which just shows how big this project is going to be. Now its just a matter of filling it with information. The first bit of information that I added was SDM's frame data because that was a simple copy-paste, don't worry, I made sure it showed that it was your data SDM ;).

Okay, this is what I'm looking for. If you have the time, and you know what your talking about (important), post in this thread about anything peach related. There are millions of things you could write out (trust me, I made links for them all). You can talk about dtilt, you can talk about upsmash, toad, dash attack, her match up vs pichu whatever. Just make it in depth, post it here, and I'll copy-paste it all into the website with credit to you. Also try and keep the language formal and presentable but not confusing. If you have pictures or videos that could accompany your section, inform me. I have most of the peach videos you can find on DC++, so say for instance, Ryoko does a dtilt combo in a certain vid and that is your section, I'll edit the vid for that dtilt combo segment and it can accompany your information.

I personally would like to work on the turnip section. Choose your area of expertise and knowledge and get started! Even a lengthy comment can (and will if you want) be contributed to it's respective section.

Polygon-imagery of all the moves would be excellent as well (similar to the link SDM gave for fair), I have the imagery for bair, nair, uair and fair. However they are only the attacking sections of the move (entire animations would be good).

Lastly, I'll need someone to get the website (I'm using Dreamweaver) on the web. Doesn't ross have that 'coming soon' ssbm info site? maybe he might hold it for us?

TiRune

I'll be gone next week for austria, can give me the link to the stuff you have already afterwards? I'll be coming back the 16th, and after that I'll have lotsa time to write for the guide.

I've been experimenting with the djc a lot and its working more and more often. it's like trying to fit in l-cancel all over again but only way harder now :P.

As stated I'll also shoot some vids of me and my friend playing, in the matches I'll use djc, WD, float cancel (well, actually all the stuff a peach player should use -_-') so I can refer to those, I'll contact you (Quetzalcoatl) when the vids are up so u can get em :P

cyas when I get back from austria all!

Since im really early in my learning stages, I don't think i know enough to truly post opinions etc.

however, I do wish to take a part in creating this guide. so I think i could take the turnip probabilities and do a 1k or more turnip experiment.

So im in the middle of a gigantic fthrow statistic collection, and am simultaneously doing experiments on the frequency of each of peach's fsmashes. So far, I'm not more than 1/8 of the fthrow collection so im not releasing any data yet (this is my experiment and I am going to do it) but the fsmash data ive collected so far:
Frying Pan--131; 32.27%
Tennis Racket--130; 32.02%
Golf Club--145; 35.72%

SO basically, its just a confirmation of what we all suspected, but never said. It appears to be equal chance for any one.
Also i can pretty much confirm that it is impossible to pull the same smash weapon twice in a row. At least it hasnt happened yet. This may affect the statistics in some way, but im not going to put enough thought in it tonight to figure that out.
I'll get back to you with the addition of the fthrow, but it might take a few weeks.

Yuna
03-05-2005, 06:04 AM
Well, it matters in the way that if you just pulled a frying pan, you KNOW that your next fsmash will have KO-power (against characters with sucky recoveries and fastfallers if you get a tennis raquet) (50% chance of getting a golf club and 50% chance of getting a tennis raquet).

Hunkzor
05-02-2005, 11:51 AM
So how is this guide coming? I was looking in the old topics and I noticed that I forgot you guys were working on the ultimate peach guide. Well if there is anything I can help with.

Also a note that I am no math major but I am semi good at it and Ill start seeing if I can find the randomness for the turnips in my free time.
I will start with doing 1000 turnip test and write down my results over and over again. Ill do this maybe 10 times and see if there are any type of things that match with the results. I dunno but hopefully there will be ^_^;;;.

Hunkzor
05-02-2005, 02:42 PM
This afternoon I did one trial of pulling 1000 turnips and here is what I came up with.

First trial of 1000 pulls of turnips:

Normal (smile) - 639 times

Big Eyes, open mouth - 45 times

dotted eyes smile - 17 times

chibi happy face open mouth - 43 times

winking open mouth - 61 times

closed eyes open mouth (yawning?) - 85 times

half closed eyes open mouth - 94 times

stitch face (zombie) - 12

beam sword - 1 time

Bob bomb - 2 times

Mr. Saturn - 1 time

So there are 11 different things (counting the different faces)you can pull when you are going for a turnip. 8 of them are the different faces you can pull. The others are of course the beam sword, bob-bomb and Mr. Saturn.

The dotted face and stitch face seem to come up almost the same amount of times.
The big eyes and the chibi/super happy face seem to come up the same amount of times.
The closed eyes and the half closed eyes come up around the same amount of times too.
Even though usually I get more Mr. Saturns all the time in matches he came up earlier 200-300ish range and the beam sword came near the end probably around 900ish. The bob bomb came up once in the begining and once sort of near the end.
Most of the time when you go for a turnip you get the smile face.
so here are the percentages so far:

Normal (smile): 0.639 or 63.9%

Big eyes, open mouth: 0.045 or 4.5%

Dotted eyes smile: 0.017 or 1.7%

Chibi happy face open mouth: 0.043 or 4.3%

Winking open mouth: 0.061 or 6.1%

Closed eyes open mouth(yawning?): 0.085 or 8.5%

Half Closed eyes open mouth: 0.094 or 9.4%

Stitch Face (zombie): 0.012 or 1.2%

Beam sword: 0.001 or 0.1%

Bob Bomb: 0.002 or 0.2%

Mr. Saturn: 0.001 or 0.1%

Their not totally accurate yet but somewhat. I think with a whole bunch a tries maybe something more solid will show up in how they actually come up.
I work on the chances on getting something when I have more data.

The Alchemist
05-02-2005, 09:05 PM
ack! where do you find time to pick 1000 turnips O_O! Also I remember this one time in a match I noticed I was getting the fsmashes all in a row. I went through a cycle 4 times and each time it golf club, tennis racket, frying pan....was this a huge coincidence?

Yuna
05-02-2005, 09:35 PM
The only thing that's certain with Peach's fsmash is that you can NEVER get the same item twice in a row. So if you just got a golf club, it HAS to either be a frying pan or a tennis raquet. If you then get a tennis raquet, it HAS to be a golf club or a frying pan and so on and so on.

Hunkzor
05-02-2005, 11:45 PM
Yeah it only took 3 hours ^_^;;;;; but I am going to see if I can do a test a day.

exarch
05-03-2005, 03:04 PM
I always thought that having just one person only do massive tests was kind of pointless (unless, of course they wanted to do it alone.) But for huge tests that are easy to do (like pulling a turnip from the ground, or collecting data on fsmash) why not just have everyone who calls themselves a peach player do 100 (or more) out of love for the character? Its not like it will skew the results, in fact it might make for a better average. So instead of Hunkzor doing 10000 turnip pulls (unless you really enjoy it) why not have a bunch of people do less? We're in a smash community for a reason, why not abuse its uses? And we dont need nice round numbers to make it more accurate, so why not just pull and pull and pull until you get tired? or only pull a few at a time and keep track? Im rambling now and i think y'all get my point.

I dunno because if everyone does pulls 100 turnips it wont prove accurate results. If you pulled 1000 like I am doing yes but doing 100 turnips pulls and adding it up will prove to be inaccurate.

Sorry Hunkzor, but I dont follow your logic. If indeed the pulling of turnips is truly random (which we are pretty sure it is, right?) then having random people do random tests shouldnt affect the results.

Randomizing a random event doesnt stop it from being random.

Like if you pulled a section from pi, the numbers would still be random.

(holy crap i need a synonym for that word, i think this post does make sense, just read it a few times---SLOWLY). Assuming everyone's melee game has the same probabilities for turnips then its the same as just you doing a whole crapload of turnip pulls. If everyone doesnt have the same programming, then we get a better sample size and an average from our results, instead of just your game's probabilities.

What im trying to say, in case it isnt obvious, is that having many people pull a few turnips is the same as having a few people pull many turnips-assuming turnip pulls are random.

I hope my logic is right, its slightly math related and im pretty good at that, but if im wrong let me know and why.

qualifiers:
1We would all need to pull the same way too(maybe).
2If there is a pattern then this will screw the results

EDIT: looks like ive killed this thread for a while, but we need to start making SOME kind of indentation on this thing, so now that i'll be done with lms i can finish my grab tests, and just because this thread goes into hibernation doesnt mean some of us arent working. <--hey look a double negative: im ready to be published.

i would love to see this thread pick up again, its been dead for over a year and the boards need a good peach guide stickied, cuz the n00b guide is, well, noob. any suggestions as to how peach players as a whole can band to pull together in an organized way and tackle this, instead of randomly saying i'll do this, you do that, they'll do that, etc?

Here is a little info on the types of turnips
Note: these are PAL results so they might be different to the US version

Turnip damages

Winking turnip- 10%
Dot eye turnip- 16%
Stitch face- 34%
Any other turnips- 6%

Other stuff
I found that turnips don't get 'stale' after frequent use like most/all other attacks do.
It seems that smash throwing does +2% no matter what turnip.
Running while throwing a turnip does +1%
Z dropping a 'special' does not do any additional damage, ie. Z dropping a normal turnip and a stich face will do the same damage and knockback.

For the turnip rarity testing thing, I will make another Thread to get more participants, each one can contribute 100 results and we can add them up.

A little nitpick, but there's no such thing as "truly random." Just an algorithm that is "relatively random."

And another nitpick - 100 pulls by 10 people will probably have a larger aggregate margin of error than 1000 pulls by one person. Although for something like this, that is probably a tolerable occurrance.

That last post made me laugh for some reason, kirbstir.

I think I should just setup 5 TVs and use 1 wavebird on 5 ports, then have 5 other people rapidly tally them as I keep mashing down b. My idea owns.
