Hey guys. I'm here from Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio.
We might be starting a club here at OSU for gaming, (tentatively) called the Competitive Gaming Association (CGA). It's going to be a club where we will meet weekly and try to have a tournament in a random game at least once per month.
The first game we want to do is, of course, Smash Bros. Melee.
Please contact me to get information about this tournament I am trying to set up, in addition to some perhaps club related info.
The club isn't formed yet, so it's no real big deal yet, but as a submission to form the club, we have to have one planned group activity, and this is what I would like it to be. So anyone from Ohio, contact me. Anyone from Columbus, Contact Me! Anyone from Ohio State University area, CONTACT ME!
This won't be exclusive to OSU go-ers either. The club membership will be mainly for OSU students, but we will also have a non-OSU members list. And participation in the tournaments, for the most part, will not require any membership on the part of the participants...it'll only help to organize things.
But, anyways, like I said, this is all just mostly in the works for now. The sooner you contact me, and with more information, the sooner we can get this moving.

Good luck on forming your club up there anuj. Hopefully you'll be able to hold huge tournaments like TGA.
Heh, i live on OSU campus, but I don't go to OSU. Send me info (I think my account links to my email or something crazy like that)

Sounds like it could be fun. Of course we'll need more info if/when your club is confirmed, but that sits with time.
Omni, you in the OSU area?

Good job David. You are white. And just to let you know Anuj was down here as part of my crew during the summer. We started teaching him how to play smash with the big boys. Hopefully you can continue that teaching.
But just to let you know, he's cool by me.

There are many more people who would be interested, but many of them have recently been having computer problems, or just been to busy since school has just started up. There's a pretty big Ohio community of smashers, we just don't post a whole lot anymore. I still have the list of 57 or so GFAQs smashers from way back when >_>

I played Drew, DTS something or another tonight. I did alright. He won for the most part...maybe lost a couple times. Anyways, he can tell us how he thinks I did.
Just saying. I'm not claiming to be the best or anything at the game with the formation of this club. I'm just trying to start something huge here and hopefully play a lot of Smash. :D

That's my plan. I want to have at least a handful of members join the group (once it is set up).
Then we'll have our first meeting. We'll hand out flyers and stuff for everyone to put up, and then we'll get bigger.
But I need some preliminary members here, and that's all I want for now.

Ok, an update for all of you out there.
If all of you wouldn't mind, I need two things.
If you're interested in joining the club, then please e-mail me with the subject header "Smash Club"...or something with the worlds "smash" and/or "club" in it. :P
Try to put in your name, where you live relative to campus, smash boards name, and if you're attending OSU or not.
But really, e-mail me to tell me you're interested. I'm going to try and start and schedule our first "unofficial meeting" soon in which we will try to reach more of the campus people and try to get a larger group to play.
Soon after which we will be able to sponsor our first tournament! :D
But anyways, like I said, one, e-mail me.
Two, if you know anyone here on campus that wouldn't mind being an advisor (an advisor can be anyone that is staff or faculty here at OSU) that doesn't mind, just basically going to bat for us if we need someone of authority to represent us. I'm not exactly sure what responsibilities this position entails, but I imagine this person would basically have to kind-of be the figure-head of our club and make sure we don't kill each other and then eat each others' brains. If you know anyone that you think is cool that would seem apt to do something like this, give me their name and I will take care of everything else.
Thanks. :)

Well, we'll have meetings and probably smash-fests (meetings that turn into smash-fests every week), but I'm hoping the Smash Tourney thing will be a once-a-month activity, with 3 or 4 key big tournaments every year.
As a member, I don't think you'll be required to attend every meeting or required to attend much at all, but it will be just to organize the smash-scene sort of here.
if it's everymonth i'll try my best to make it to these.

anuj post updates on this thread to keep it goin.

10-26-2004, 08:44 PM
Yeah, good call man Kern.
Alright, so the official update.
Our club has been approved. It's up and running.
We have webspace. I'll put up a website for the club in the coming days/week. On this site we'll have leader boards for all of the people that compete in ONE OF OUR OWN TOURNAMENTS. People who do not compete in our tournament, will not be ranked (so if you wanna be known as the best, you gotta play :P). We will of course have statistics for all of these as well as character used, tournament results, etc. etc. Also, videos of the fights are something I want to make available (if possible).
It'll be a good site. (trust me people, i'm good at making websites) :P
I'm working on getting facilities for our first meeting, and the meetings to follow. These meetings will no doubt turn into friendly smash-fests. :P
I'm working on getting facilities for our special events (IE Smash tourneys :P).
I'm working on getting funding and equipment for our events/meetings. (TVs, GCs, copies of the game, cameras to record videos of the fights, which can then be later uploaded to the website for everyone's viewing pleasure).
Anyways, I'm working on that and it's coming along.
How is it coming along?
Well, I hope to have our first meeting next week.
If enough people are interested, we can meet sooner. When and where we meet is up to you guys. We will vote on all of the issues such as what are the rules, what to play, when, etc. In our first meeting we will also try to make/design/pass out flyers to place around campus, and etc. We will also work on planning our first event.
Our first event can be planned as soon as we have facilities/a date.
TVs and games and GCs and stuff can I'm sure be provided by you guys in addition to what we get from the school, which we will no doubt need.
I hope to have our first tourney in the next month or two on a Saturday or Sunday.
The rules for the tournaments as I have them mapped (some of these rules can and no doubt will be changed as indicated by the members).
We will have 2v2 and 1v1.
The 2v2 teams will always be held first.
$10 for the 1v1, and $5 for the 2v2 per person.
Participation in the first official annual CGA tournament will buy you a free membership to the club (REMEMBER, club membership is open to OSU and non-OSU students, a.k.a. ANYONE). Club membership after that point will be $5 (subject to change), which will buy you membership for the year.
I'm thinking we'll have a pre-registration and a registration (that will cost slightly more). The pre-registration will allow you to see the fight brackets ahead of time on the website, which should only SLIGHTLY change by the day of the actual tournament, which if it does change, should only change to your advantage (getting a "bye" instead of fighting your opponent).
ALMOST ALL OF THE MONEY ENTERED IN THE TOURNEY WILL GO BACK INTO THE POT. THIS CLUB ISN'T DESIGNED FOR PROFIT, BUT TO PLAY SMASH! :D
(any SMALL amount subtracted will be taken out for the purposes of simply funding the current tourney or the NEXT tourney, where we hope to have free drinks and snacks).
As for the rules.
Haha, look up standard tournament rules, I think. :P
Here are some controversial topics that come to mind:
Team attack ON
Items OFF
Double Elimination ON
Best 2 out of 3 for first round
3 out of 5 for the final rounds.
Stage pick/counterpick, character pick/counterpick will be handled the way it is normally handled in tourneys (first stage is random, then loser pick stage OR new character with random stage).
The matches will be 4-stock, no-time limit fights (but if I or anyone finds people lagging the fights and doing stuff that makes the fights take foreeeever (Peach Bombing, Ice Climber freeze glitch, etc.), they will be DISQUALIFIED!)
The GOOD stages will be ON, on random (FD, Battlefield, Dreamland N64, Fountain of Dreams, etc, etc....(can't remember the rest)).
The CRAP CRAP CRAP stages will be banned (Hyrule Temple, Flatzone, Icicle Mountain, etc. etc.)
The officers and executive members (as decided by myself and the other officers :D) of the CGA that are present at the tournament will be the official referees for the tournament (they will of course be also allowed to play, but just not referee the match that they are in). I don't really expect a problem in that area to occur, but hey, if it does...
And most of you people who have met me in real life know that I'm a pretty nice guy, and don't really know all of the "proper" way to handle things, and will generally allow stuff if it is acceptable by the players (IE, the players of a certain match decide they want to play on Hyrule Temple).
I know I've probably fogotten a few things here and there, but I wanted to be as thorough as possible. Feel free to add more for consideration.
Thanks....phew, I sure wrote a lot....I hope anyone reads it all, haha. :D

Ok, here is an official stage list (subject to change):
RANDOM:
FD
Battlefield
Fountain of Dreams
Yoshi's Story
Pokemon Stadium
Kirby 64
BANNED:
Hyrule Temple
Fourside
Brinstar Depths
Termina
Yoshi's Island 64
Flat Zone
I think this sounds pretty good, but this can be changed based on if we decide something else or by voting, or whatever.

Great work, Anuj. The GG will try to make it out to the tournaments, but we can't gaurantee attending every one, just because of distance and other obligations. We'll try our best to make it when possible, though.

Yeah, so we're thinking of having our first meeting sometime next week.
When are good times for you guys to meet?
When are bad times?
I'm thinking it'll be in the evening on one of the weekdays.
Time doesn't really matter to me, late is fine, early is...well, worse, haha.
Tuesdays and Wed. evening I work till 9. We can't meet on those nights if you guys don't want to meet after 9. Which leaves Monday and Thursday (unless meeting after 9 is ok by you guys), and maybe possibly Friday.
Let me know.

From the look of it, these are the possible times:
Monday 6:30
Thursday before 5 or after 7:30
Friday at 6:30-ish.
This is the only way I can fit everyone.
We can meet this Thursday if enough of you are interested...we'll just have to meet at my house for now (really close to campus).
