View Full Version : Easier homing grapple
Don't know how useful anyone will find this, but i found an interesting way to get your homing grapple going. Although missing the grapple will leave you very vulnerable to attack, Some people still find it more useful than the standard grapple beam, at least i do. Well a good way to get it going, is to drop 1 bomb on the ground, then drop a second one to bomb jump and as soon as you do the bomb jump press those buttons needed for the homing grapple while in the air instead of the ground. Now the question one would ask is "well if you get hit in the air and off the stage while doing this you won't be able to use the grapple beam for recovery, well the second bomb dropped will cut the animation of the mid air grapple beam in half and allow you to immediately do an air dodge or arial move, best would be sex kick. By the time you reach the ground it will be homing, as long as you did it correctly in the air. So not only is the animation for the air grapple faster than doing the homing grapple on the floor, you cut the air grapple animation in half, you can immediately cancel into an arial move(as long as you DI into the bomb right), and if you mess up you aren't as vulnerable. Any thoughts? Another thing, if there is a much more efficient way, can you inform me?

yeah, alot of samuses already do this at the beginning of the match to get the homing. i don't really find it being much faster because in the time it takes to drop both bombs you could sh up and do it quickly. I guess it's just a difference in opinion, but the bomb way does give you a bit more protection. this is really only useful the first life though, since you can just do it on the ay off the angel thing after that. another thing i've been thinking of that could make it go faster is to sh up and then do a beam cancel thing down while doing the buttons for extending it, i'm not sure if this would work, but it'd probably be pretty fast.

This has been mentioned before, but I'll just repeat it. For quick reference, just read the bold.
After dropping a bomb, just before Samus hits the ground, move the joystick to the left or to the right, depending on which direction you want to go. As soon as Samus hits the ground, jam the joystick in the opposite direction. You'll see Samus move across the course at rapid speed.

What do you have to press exactly while the beam is out?
I can do this, I just wanted to know an exact button combo.
Also thanks to Gaiagamer.
I could never do the SWD, now that you have explained that I did it my first try. Thanks

No problem, Cape. Just felt like answering that question once and for all:chuckle: :p :chuckle:
Extended Grapple- Also, after hitting z, rotate the joypad clockwise, while continually hitting the z button.
*note*- The grapple will not automaticly grab onto the enemy when in extended grapple mode. In order to actually use the extended grapple to throw, you need to hit the z button as soon as it reaches the opponent.
Homing Grapple- After you get the extended grapple up and running, hold in the L button while using your grapple to make the beam home in on the closest opponent to you. As soon as the beam reaches the opponent, hit z again to latch onto them.
Hope this helped as well.

joypad as in the joypad used to taunt??? I have yet to do this tactic after many tries. I've tried both the joystick and the joypad yet i still fail every time.
Its the D-pad (NOT THE JOYSTICK). The direction pad below the joystick. Well it sometimes takes a few tries. When you say you haven't been able to do it do you mean doing it the way i posted? or do you mean the regular way. Just jam up and down on the D-pad back and forth while pressing Z rapidly. I know you end up doing a taunt, but eventually you will do it just right so that you dont taunt, and out comes an extended grapple. Keep trying.

To perform this extension simply do samus' grab using the R button+A of course, then the whole animation of her grab simply rotate the D-PAD clock-wise continuously all the while you should also be tapping the A button....
doesn't even take practice........ and it works every time for me and people who I show it to.
Much simpler than "laying Bombs" and crap
..........signed.......JOKER.............
Thanks for the input joker, but the point of it was to make it more convenient. The "bomb laying crap" adds an extra bit of protection. And i believe pressing the Z button rapidly and pressing up and down rather than "R and A while pressing A rapidly and rotating in all directions with the D pad" is easier.... although both methods work. Trying this on the floor leaves you open to attack simply put. In the air you get just a little bit more protection, thats all i was saying.

Am i right in thinking this can't be done in PAL?
Yep. There's no extender in PAL.
I like this. If you keep hitting Z after the second bomb explodes you do a sex kick. Very nice...
And by the way, exact button combo:
(in first 39 frames)
Up, down, up (all on d-pad), Z.
Props to Typh
holy moley! this is such an old thread! and i still learn something new =O
