View Full Version : SHFFLING help with Marth/Roy

Basically.. I don't know how to shffl. I tried in training, short jumped, did a nair, fast falled during it and pressed L and I still had to do the landing animation. What exactly am I doing wrong?
Also, does it work with Roy?
For Marth, usually you shffl his fairs, doing two fairs in a short hop before l-cancelling it and proceeding with another. I'm not exactly sure about his nair, but I don't l-cancel it and I have no problems doing another one immediately; All I do is fast fall his nair. Perhaps you could jump during the landing animation? Or maybe it's just me.
Well, Roy has a disadvantage here because of his falling speed. Unlike Marth, he can't do two fairs in one short hop. He only can do one, but his fastfall is so fast that if you l-cancel it well enough, you can move on to another quick one. Just look at some vids of NEO and you'll see why =).

In the video of Masashi vs CJ - on Fountain of dreams, cj did a whole bunch of short hopped n-airs really quickly, like one every half second, all in a fluid motion. I'd like to know how to do that.
So generally, shffling (with marth's fairs) is jumping, one fair, and then the 2nd, and it shouldn't complete the attack animation when I land right. So before I land -I press the L button. What time frame do I press the button, anytime during the attack or what?

Well, you're gonna have a landing animation no matter what (you have to land right?) Yes it works with roy, in fact it works with every char in the game >_>
If you press all the buttons right and he still has the same lag, then it means ur pressing L at the wrong time... all i can say it learn to time it (it's like the same timing as teching.. right b4/when u hit the ground)
to do what cj did you just have to do everything as fast as possible (not so hard once u practice a lil).
So before I land -I press the L button. What time frame do I press the button, anytime during the attack or what?
what? ur answering ur own question... you press it right b4 u land, doesnt matter what time during the attack as long as it's rigth b4 u land

It works better with Roy, because he isn't floaty like Marth. You can catch opponents in U-air juggles if you can shffl fast enough. I usually manage to rack about 30-40% if I can catch someone in it.
Well, Roy has a disadvantage here because of his falling speed. Unlike Marth, he can't do two fairs in one short hop.
I would gander to say that Roy can shffl 2 fairs in roughly the same time Marth can throw out 2 with one short hop. I don't have my cube now so I can't test it.

That's why I said that =). It may even be faster than Marth's, in fact. But it's just too fast for me to be able to perform it consistantly and efficiently...

Ha.
Abusing SHFFL'd F.airs with Roy has got to be one the most spectacular ways I can think of to get him killed.

If the first Fair doesn't get you Shield Grabbed or CCC'd -- the second one most certainly will.
Not trying to seem openly argumentative, but even if that is true-- really--what purpose would it serve for Roy other than an easy way to get him killed?

I was just trying to make a point. Roy can be just as fast with shorthopped aerials as Marth, if not faster.
Also, the same could be said about Marth's double fairs. It won't help you much if they shield the first one either. If you connect that's another story.
Besides, if you connect with a fair with Roy you have better combo oppertunities with the down tilt than with other aerials.

Nuh uh.
Because of Marth's floatiness, Marth can DI and space his Fairs appropriately, making his double Fair technique extremely hard to punish. Not only does proper spacing with his Fairs reward Marth much more so than Roy's, but it makes them totally safer.
The only thing anyone can do to punish a double Fair, properly spaced, is to do something out of shield (obviously besides grab) and even that's unlikely, as L- Canceling the second hit asures Marth's recovery is ace.

It's harder to punish, but it's still punishable. Double fairs aren't an end all strategy that slays all, but a lot of people seem to think it is.
Anyways, this is about shffl's and I never meant to get in a discussion of Marth and Roys aerials and how to punish them, but simply point out that Roy can shffl very very well. Shffl'ed up airs are pretty darn effective too.

double-fairs are only really half-decent in my opinion; spectacular to pull off from time to time simply for some quick damage, but I don't think it's really necessary at all. Definitely cool to see though =). I usually only link maybe two f-airs together if I do it at all though; I'm really not a combo freak, though I'm working on it. For some unknown reason, I like to land and f-smash to go for the ledge-guard.

Thanks for the tips guys - I've gotten shffling down now, and I pretty much recover instantly from all of my aerial moves. I've also gotten shorthopped fast falled n-airs with marth down pretty easily, just like CJ did.
I just didn't know what the look was when shffling, like how my character came out - so I kept thinking I was doing it wrong. Thanks for all the help from everyone.
Now try some advance shffl's, like Uair and Dair ^^
Great setup moves.
