There's places you can look for that, you don't have to waste topic space to ask.

I guess I'll take a shot at this. . .
Wavedashing (WD) is complex at first, but w/ enough practice, it should become automatic, especially w/ Doc/Mario.
WDing consists of 3 parts--jumping, airdodging, then directing the airdodge diagonally downwards (i.e. 45 degrees below the horizontal, either left or right).
To begin the wavedash, press the X or Y button to jump. Immediately after jumping (so that the character barely leaves the ground) press the L or R trigger to airdodge. WHILE you airdodge, quickly jam the Control Stick diagonally downwards (down-right or down-left at a 45 degree angle).
As a result of the steps mentioned above, the character will slide along the ground, w/ a puff of white smoke trailing from his/her feet (sometimes for a split second displaying their crouching animation). Practice w/ Luigi. He can move across Final Destination in about 3 WDs.
Some tips: be sure not to hold L/R too long, or you will end the WD in your shield. Also, you can alter the length of your wavedash depending on the angle you jam the Control Stick; 45 degrees=standard WD, 30 degrees below horizontal=long WD, and 60 degrees=short WD.
Uses of WDing:
1) Wavesmashing: WD forward or back+C-stick smash. This works great for Doc/Mario's d-smash, and WD back+Mario's f-smash let you sweetspot it more often than normal.
2) Mobility: You can move much faster than normal when WDing. You can also retreat from the enemy while still facing them.
3) Attacking: You can perform any standing attack from a WD: this includes tilts, smashes, grabs, etc. Tacking on a WD before an attack can give it extra speed and range.
4) Edgehogging: WDing to an edgehog is much faster than a short hop backwards.
5) Waveshielding: WD towards your opponent while holding L/R down will always end your WD w/ your shield up, allowing you to safely approach your opponent; good against Marth's insane range.
6) Aerial WD: When in the air, right before you land, WD w/o the jump (just airdodge diagonally downwards) and you will wavedash from the air. Aerial WDs are usually longer than ground WDs, and give you great air to ground mobility.
7) Mindgames: Use WDing to psych your opponent and trick them. Example: Run into your opponent's attack range to bait them. Before his attack hits, WD back, then wavesmash forward to take advantage of his attack's lag.
That's all I can think of right now. . .if you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

I think i got it down pretty good. The only problem is i usually get hit while i am doing it and i have the sheild at the end alot but i guess i just need to keep practicing.

the shield = lag.
try to do the WD without coming out with your shield up

i do wavedash without my shield up and it seems everytime before i get my smash off i get hit. I might be able to get the smash in every now and then but very rarely. What am i doing wrong?

Maybe you're being too predictable with it?

same thing happened to me when I was first learning to WD. You're probably, like before mentioned, being too predictable with it, or your spacing is slightly off. Give it a try maybe a bit further from your opponent than you have been.

its starting to work a little better now....... what are ways not to be predictable with it.
I usually use it as a means of moving around on the stage, and while doing this i try to sneak in smash when i think they are in range and to hang off the edge faster then just jumping.

you could try wave landing from jumps. short hop forward/WD back for example. use it for returning from the ledge, this one is pretty tricky though, it took me quite a bit of practice to get it down. WD out of dashdances. WaveDance back and forth, just mix it up and don't always do the same thing out of your WD.

Another reason why you may not be able to connect a smash is that you are using Doctor Mario and you are using the Forward smash, which has horrible range.

glad that my advice helped, or at least pointed you in somewhat the right direction for your training. Feel free to throw out more questions if you have them.
