What happened?

I've played SSB for since the N64 game was released, and have loved Melee ever since its release date. I used to consider myself an above average player (which was arrogance, since I have participated in any tourneys), but now? What with shffling, L-Cancelling, and wavedashing, I see I am way behind. Does anyone else think that these new techniques spoiled their old Meleeing days? Also, if someone not using theses techs battled someone who did use them, would he/she be doomed from the start? (P.S. My First Post on SmashBoards)

As for this topic basically you can look at it two different ways. If you aren't a serious SSBM player then you don't need to worry about it. However all the tourny players and advanced Melee players need these techniques as they are for advanced players.
