I've done it once or twice in Training Mode, but I probably couldn't do it again. Most of the time when I do it, they either get sent straight up, or diagonally away from me. I'm not quite sure what part of the blade I'm supposed to hit them with. Can you guys help me? Thanks! :)

The range is pretty much directly in front of Link. Go into Training Mode, put the speed on 1/4, stand right in front of the opponent, and do the down tilt. If you see green light effects (such as the kind you see when Captain Falcon does his Falcon Dive off the ground) then that’s the spike, though they’ll still go up since there’s ground below them. The good thing about this, though, is that they’re stunned in the air longer than if you catch them with a regular down tilt, so depending on the characters and damage, you could easily pull off a downward aerial on them if you catch them with a down tilt spike while they’re on the floor. For edge guarding, you can position Link slightly away from the ledge, though I would recommend different edge guarding tactics with Link.

Yeah, Link's spike during edge guarding is extremely hard too pull off. Majority of times if you try it, you either might get hit, or you'll hit too late and the opponent will be sent flying upward instead of downwards. The trick is to pull it off slightly before they even start up on to grab the edge, then you'll send them downward...easier said then done....I think I can spike successfully...like 15% out of 100...I dunno...it's just very low, it's hard to do.

Your better off edge hogging or your SpinAttack, but if you could master this spike...wow, I'd give you mad props.

i didn't know link had the spike, but i know young link has it, and i thinks its easier with him, cause my brother uses it often. or atleast when he does use it, it works

Try and hit them with the bottom of the blade. The opponent has to be below Link. It's easier to pull this off on CF and Ganon than other characters.

They don’t have to be below the blade, it just depends on the distance between Link and the opponent. You should try to connect as if you wanted to hit them with Link’s arm. Basically right in front of the person. The reason is works with Young Link much more often is because he has a shorter sword, so the spike range is bigger.

Actually, I would think that the spike range isn't bigger, it's simply easier to hit because it's the same size on both swords, but since Young Link's sword is smaller more of the sword spikes than it doesn't. Though you can still miss the spike and send them up and away with Young Link, it's hard to do if you actually try IMO.

unless that's what you meant in the first place;)

I've been expirementing and it seems the level 9 CPU is really good at using Link's D Tilt spike. He knows the distance perfectly. Fight him in slow mode to better learn the distance, I guess? Hehe.

This isn't really about the D-Tilt spike, but I heard you can spike with Link's Up-B, too. How do you do that? I know sometimes I've sent them away at a pretty much horizontal angle, but I've never spiked anyone with it. How do you do that?

It's a pseudo spike, meaning it's not really a spike, but it sort of acts like one. If you hit people with the tip of the up+B after it's already started, it sends people out horizontally, or even downards and horizontally. For people that can't grab directly onto the edge from using their up+B (in most cases because of the player), Link will send them downward since he's hitting them with the bottom side of the tip of the up+B.

I hope that made sense...

Edit: For the d-tilt spike, you can also hit people above the tip of the blade and it will spike.

I think ASCII style, the sweet spot would look like this (though the sword would not be facing so much downwards)

Okay, so that looks like crap, but the line is the sword and the asterisks are the areas which spike. Above the tip and below (or right on) the blade closest to Link.
