It is well known that you can make the f-tilts of some characters (Doc and Mario included) go slightly up or down is you tilt in one of the diagonal notches on the control stick instead of directly forward. But untill I noticed myself do it, I've never heard about being able to do this with f-smashes. I'm sure some of you know this but I just wanted to throw it out there because I've never seen anyone mention it. I haven't tried yet, but maybe doing a downward f-smash will punish someone trying to cc it? Anyway, you never know how it may come in handy.

Because it's not exactly the most usefull tactic. It doesn't do any good against crouch canceller's either.

Exactly. The only thing you could use it for would be to angle it up when someone intercepts you from the air to get a better hit-box. But as Zero EXE said, it is not a viable tactic.

Actually, I've found that tilting Mario's f-smash to be pretty useful. . .

Everyone knows that Mario's f-smash is practically ineffective b/c it needs to be sweetspotted--the length of the area between Mario's hand and the fireball is pretty large.

But I've found that tilting Mario's f-smash downwards decreases the non-sweetspotted area just a little bit, so you're more likely to sweetspot than if you used a non-tilted f-smash.

So tilting Mario's f-smash downwards is especially good when the opponent's real close.

Hopefully, my observation's true. . .hopefully someone can double check.

I use marios forward smash tilted downwards for edgeguarding, it is really effective when they are hanging on the edge as well

While it may hold true, keep in mind that in a fever-pitched battle, most people are probably not going to focus on trying to 'aim' thier F-smash, simply because it's somewhat tedious to do. Trying to tap the C-stick in just the right way isn't going to be a huge priority during most matches, and trying to use te control stick+A is even worse. Therefore, I find it not to be a tactic that could drastically impact a match.

WJ, yes, your idea does work, but because most people don't hang around on the edge for too long after they stop flashing, it's better to just intercept them as they come back on the stage.

But hey, whatever's works for you guys.
