View Full Version : Problems with G+W

I'm considering G+W as a potential main, but there are a couple things that bother me:
1) He's so... flat... where's the personality?
2) Why is his rolling dodge SO SLOW? It keeps him from being good on the ground...
Other than that, he has great attack speed, aerials, and recovery

1) THAT is his personality. His personality also comes from the Nostalgic point of view. All of his attacks represent a different Game and Watch game that have been collaberated into one single character, Unlike some characters, who just have moves that were thrown in there for whatever reason, EVERY. SINGLE. MOVE. Is represented by a game.
2)GaW's ground game is different, you have to rely on shielding, and the smashes that come out faster than pretty much most other characters (F-Smash is just unfair with how quickly it can be spammed). Personally, I don't have much of a ground game with him. You're right, his ground game is not extremely strong, especially his roll. The only things I use on the ground are his Fsmash, Dsmash, The Bucket, and Shieldgrabbing, that's it. >.>

I'm liking him more and more now that I'm playing him alot. I'll have to get used to not rolling I guess. Besides the attacks you mentioned I also use his helmet alot (up smash) when opponents are spinning in the air above me.
Can you give me advice on when to use his Judgement / forward-B? It doesn't have much range so I feel like I need some sort of setup move first.
First of all, dont judge a character on their personality. People that do that are the people that end up playing random low tier characters, and saying that tires don exitz. Play him because he's good, which he is.
The rolling isn't that bad, and it only looks slower because of his choppy animation.

No his rolling really is slower. Try it out, the best way to tell for sure is to time how many rolls you can do in 1 minute, and then to the same test with, say, Marth or Fox. I'll guarantee they can roll almost twice as fast.
Try a Down Throw, then chase, Side B, and hope for a 9.

G+W's ground game is very strong with d-throw, tilts and smashes.

I'm relatively new with G&W and hadn't explored the d-throw yet. Thanks for the advice guys!

yeah i wouldn't decide how good a character is at all based on your criterion. "Personality" is a very meaningless part of a character that doesn't affect how he's played at all. Rolling is something even in brawl i don't even use very much, mainly because it is just so punishable with any character.

I agree and disagree with you. Correct, don't judge a character on their personality, thats stupid. Yes, tiers do exist, but don't play a character because of their tier ranking, play a character that you like. There were ten billion Fox players in melee and I know at least half of them didn't care for Fox's character whatsoever. That irks me.
Playing high tier characters because its easier to win with them seems so empty to me.

This is true but when there is money involved, people play to win.

meh, i don't see how you could say he lacks personality. G+W probably has the most personality out of any character in smash. he has unique, odd attacks that all have weird little things to them. i mean ****, he ****ing cooks bacon/tuna/chicken, jumps off trampolines, has his pet turtle bite people, lights people with matches, and spills fish on people. how can you possibly think that someone who does that has less personality than bland characters like marth/MK/ike????? ooooooh look i got a sword i can swing it man how UTTERLY EXCITING is that?

MK has a tight color scheme. But yeah, GW's moves have more personality, and his color scheme is more useful for camouflage. (light blue ducking down on FD is impossible to see)
Play a character because they fit your playstyle. I played CF in melee because he had good air moves.
You can approach pretty well with the nair, but the bair generally works better. The nair is also good for comboing if you hit with it when it is weak (during beginning of the animation)

Also, GW is awesome to play with friends b/c you can say stupid funny **** for all of his attacks
like here's what i do.
when i ftilt i'm like "TAKE A SEAT"
when i grab and plan on dthrowing -> dsmash i'm like "STOP.......... HAMMER TIME"
when i keep Uair juggling someone i'm like "HAHA I'M MUFFIN PUSHING YOU"
or if I bacon spam the edge i say "Breakfast is served"
etc.
there's really no other character you can do that for.

1. WTF, G&W is pimpin' awesome! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/Arcadia12345/Umbrella-Dance-small.gif
2. That's not his main problem. It would be if his shield sucked, which it doesn't this time. His only real problem is weight. He's of course lightweight.
Anyway picking up G&W shouldn't be too hard. Just approach with B-airs and try to link stuff from a D-throw. You can kill someone fast with one of his overpowered Smash attacks too.

back air is the most unstoppably unpunishable shield pressure move in the game.

I agree completely.
I play characters because of how I like them, without regards to tier.
I had a Marth that was quite good when playing against my friends, but I didn't really enjoy using him. I was much more happy to pick up G+W and Yoshi - even if it meant I would lose quite often (although, I'm starting to go well now).
As of recently, I am much better with G+W and Yoshi than I was with Marth - not because I have used them for longer, or tried harder with them (trained for hours on end with Marth) but because I enjoy using them.
Look at it like art, even the best artists pieces are worth less than a child's if the artist doesn't enjoy making them while the child does.
(And yes, I do know the above metaphor is incorrect (and poorly worded!) - but just pretend it is)

I agree that G&W has nearly no ground game. His air game may be phenomenal but I'm starting to think that being limited to an awesome air game without having other useful options may just be too **** predictable. But at least his bair can't be blocked well which means that they have to avoid you and not should you..... But then again because G&W has so much lag after landing fair and bair it could be very easily punished from someone who just short hops away from your range and gets a free hit.
G&W is great against mediocre players. But I think his viable attacks are too predictable in general to beat someone who actually tries to counter him. Either way I'm a G&W main until someone does counter every turtle I pull out =(

what do you mean he has a bad ground game? You can tech off his dthrow, and his over and down smash=godly. The chair is'nt that bad to use either and the man hole is'nt COMPLETELY useless

When I pull off the Uair I say "I'm blowing you" or "Blowjobs for everyone"
If I pull off a bucket "I tell them I just splooged on their face"
and a less gay line is
Down taunt = "Mr. Game and Watch says F YOU"

Lets see, I usually try to sneak in a Judgement when I'm doing a dash attack, but it would be a good idea to pull it off right after a down throw. Seriously you've got to utalize the throw, it's usually a free hit on anything.

Game and watchs dthrow is essential to his game, you need to learn how to use it. LOL I love the lines you guys are using!! Back in melee I always use to try to say funny things like that, such as big things come in small packages after the dair to rest move with jiggs lol. That got me punched in the face.
