According to wikipedia:
"In the F-Zero GP Legend anime, "Captain Falcon" is a title given to a person, instead of an individual's actual name."
This has to explain the Captain's new appearance. After owning in 2 straight SSB games, he decided to retire and leave his name to his amazing padawan student.
Well, Sakurai almost had me fooled. No wonder he's still amazing, but not quite as good.
