View Full Version : Regardless of whether or not he's a clone...

I still think that Toon Link has to be one of the least thought-out characters in the game. While characters like Lucas and Wolf have tons of unique flair that makes people vehemently insist that they're not clones, Toon Link has none of that going for him. Not only is he essentially Link except with a normal boomerang instead of a gale boomerang, he's also somewhat a broken character. I always see him topping everyone's character impression ratings. Honestly I think he was just put in the game for his look.
After weeks of thinking about the roster, Toon Link is the only character I still have a problem with. Don't get me wrong, he's a cool character and he looks fun to play, but I just don't think they put enough thought into creating him outside of his appearance.
IMO, Toon Link is the only real clone.

I've had that feeling too. The thing that disappoints me the most is that we had to lose Mewtwo, a very original character, but we still kept a character who was a clone. And there were so many things they could have done to de-clone him and make him a very unique character, but they didn't do any of that. I remember seeing a ton of WW inspired movesets for him, but all I see from it now is a taunt. Very disappointing.

It's not about moves and originality that make TL stand out for me. It's his speed and his mobility that make him as powerful as link, but fast which allow for him to move around quick, dodge more efficiently than normal link, etc. He IS different, and he's different enough for me to favor him over normal Link. Play Link, then play TL. They should feel a bit different. I do now own Brawl yet, but from watching videos, TL seems quicker and in some cases more powerful.
But I completely agree, they should have included things like the Deku Leaf, hammer, etc. etc. from WW to make him more original, but hey, they didn't. He's a good enough character for me though, even if he isn't original.
I don't see how he's more cloney than Ganondorf. The only thing that looks different from Falcon is >B. At least Ylink has adifferent nair and bair. Also, how does being broken affect anything? Shouldn't that help him if anything?

I favor him over Link too (Toon Link is funny, Link is too serious), I just think that it's a shame that they didn't make him more unique. I understand that Ganondorf and Falco are still pretty much clones for the people who mained them in Melee (but the fans will give you a whole spiel for saying that).
I suppose Toon Link is the way he is for the people who played Young Link... I really wanted to think of him as an fresh, new character, but now I just think of him as a vastly improved Young Link with a new look.
