***Super Smash Brothers Brawl***

***Super Smash Brothers Brawl***
Nintindo Wii

General (apply to all events unless otherwise noted):
Items off.
Ties are broken by remaining lives, then %. If both criteria are tied, then the Sudden Death match will be played out.
First stage is random from the Neutral stages listed below.
Each player is allowed to reset the random stage once; this forces a new random stage to be picked. If the new stage has been previously reset by either player during the same set, that stage is reset again. (Random Stage Reset)
The loser of the first match will announce a new stage to play on for the next game. The winner will then be allowed to switch characters, followed by the loser. Apply the same logic for the third match (and fourth/fifth when applicable) if there is one. (Advanced Slob Picks)
No stage may be used twice in a single set if the counter-picking player has already won on that stage, unless the opponent agrees to use the stage again. (Dave's Stupid Rule)
Double Blind character pick can be called at anytime before the first game of a set starts, and only apply to the first game.
Each person (or team) may choose one counter-pick stage to be disabled for the entire set at the START OF THE SET, after characters have been chosen but before the random stage has been picked. You may not ban neutral stages.
Controller Mods, Glitches (IC Freeze Glitch, Mewtwo Soul Stunner, etc), and tactics used to stall a match (wall-bombing, rising pound), are banned.
For doubles: Team Attack will be ON, life stealing allowed.
Wobbling is not banned.
best 2/3 double elim.
3 stocks, 5 minute time limit.
Gamecube or classic controller used only. No wiimote/numchuk due to sync problems holding up the tournament.

This is the official rules for the FINALROUND11 tournament. And the ban of wiimote/nun disturbed me a little. I was just wondering on how other feel? And do you think this is going to begin to apply for most large tournaments?

I wonder if they even realize that the classic controllers has to sync through a wiimote just like a nunchuck?

I think as time goes on we'll be seeing rules like this less and less. Tournament hosts will have to start considering the fresh blood coming to tourneys, as well as the seasoned pros who make the switch over to other control schemes. The logistical issues will eventually have to addressed for larger tournaments, but I don't think GC only is going to be the solution.

I was wondering about the Classic Controller too. Lol, maybz they just forgot?
As for syncing issues/time, it can be quite a hassle for large scale tournies to have to sync so frequently, and I can empathize with them too...stupid syncing..

There is also the issue with crossing over of signals, or having to worry about battery life, etc.
Even the MLG Halo/COD4 circuits require players to use wired XBox Controllers, so GC is likely to remain the only legal control scheme.

This is an OBVIOUS choice and will happen at EVERY tournament.

syncing is waaay too inconsisent. even with only 1 wii it takes me like 5 tries to get it. i can't imagine how messy it would be with multiple wiis syncing at once.

why would you use anything but the GC controller? Every other major gaming series makes players use wired controllers (Halo, COD, Melee, etc). Syncing is a time consumer and a pain to sit through.

O.o Whaaoaoaoaoaoaaaaat?

This, after a few minor edits over time, unfortunately, will probably become the standard. Sad about the Wiimote/Nunchuck thing; I was planning on using that combination...

its the easiest to just have GC remotes, it just easier.

Tell that to Nintendo. Dumb people are making us all use Wiimotes they supply at the canadian EBgames tournies.

I thin k is a stupid choice.

A lot of people will prefer shake smash over the c-stick, more now that you can run and smash without stoping before. Is just stupid.

More "melee 2.0 stuff"... no way.

(A move is quicker than a stick, i think)

P.D.: In a asociaton where i am, we have to sync all the controllers (like sixteen or so) in every meeting, and it only takes 5 minutes with a bit organization, you know... and if you are triying to puit a wiimote without syncing to the wii (only for playing that game), the time goes down.

Omg. my grammar gets worse and worse, sorry.

This shouldn't come as a surprise. Synching up can be a pain and not to mention problems like running out of batteries for your controller. GC controllers seem to be the best anyway.

See my edit.

I have experience syncing controllers. It's not that hard. And i think that they didn't quit the classic controller because it's classic... or else they did forgot about the classic controller's sync.

Aniway, I think this is a BAD decision. People who wants to play with wiimote+nunchaku are going to be disturbed by this :/

P.D.: Really, shake smash is worth off a bit waste of time.

Edit 2: Just seem in these tules that wobbling is allowed. Well, i'm not saying my oppinion because i think that's the most broken technique ever.

well, at least everyone is using gamecube controller!!

Firestorm88

This was obvious since the control options were announced. In a tournament, YOU BRING YOUR OWN CONTROLLER. Syncing them for every match is just time-consuming and not worth it. They probably just forgot the classic controller option. Every tournament requires players to bring a wired controller, Smash is no different.

We aren't talking about GameStop's crappy excuse for tournaments. We're talking about competitive tournaments. I'd say the only reason people are going to the GameStop ones is to show Nintendo that we ARE interested in tournaments for this game and because the prize is so good with 0 buy-in.

Kirby King

GameStop's going to supply people with controllers to use, so there won't be any syncing problems.

yoshi_fan: the main reason that wireless controllers are typically banned at most tournaments (Smash and non-Smash) is typically interference (just in normal use, i.e. during a match), along with the fact that syncing isn't always as easy for others as it may be for you. This is less an issue at Nintendo's official tournaments, where there are probably fewer setups than at some other large tournaments (I'm guessing on that, since I'm not clear on how they were setup), and where the controllers don't have to get resynced. When there are so many units around, it's a huge pain if you try to sync your Wiimote and it ends up getting synced to the wrong console. Obviously Nintendo and GameStop don't have to worry about that since everyone shares controllers, but for every other tournament that requires you to bring your own controller, it's an issue.

Lmfao, do you realize how many times you'd have to resync your controller? Imagine if 20 people brought wiimotes and had to each resync 50 times at the tournament for tournament matches and friendlies. That **** would take forever. Get over it and move on. It's logical to just use GC controllers.

I'm surprised this is an issue. Several people at the tournaments I've been to have used either the classic or the combo, and there have been no problems.

Ok, a solution! Have the separate Wiis around the tournament, but sync certain Wii remotes with the....no wait, nevermind won't work.

This will be an interesting dilemma..

Lol. That would be funny. Automatic disqualification for player contact?

Anyways, I think this is a logical decision, except for the ban on the Classic Controller. I don't really see why anyone but newcomers would use the Wii-mote controllers anyway.

Has anyone been to a tournament and actually had problem with it? I should elaborate that at the tournaments I've been to, these are decent players that are using the classic or the combo and there have been no sync problems, for three weeks now.

I would like to hear a complaint of "omg it cost me the tournament" instead of speculation because I'm not seeing anything on that level right now.

Wait so people are taking WiiMote, and syncing them for each match? More info would be appreciated. Considering how long it usually takes me to get set up on someone's Wii, I wanna know what you guys are doing.

From what I've seen, the players do not have the batteries in at all times, only when they're ready to play. Put in the batteries, press the sync button, double check to make sure it's on (the icon should show) and play. Set-up time is like 30 seconds, forrealz. When the match is over, take out the batteries.

I'll ask those who use just to clarify, or maybe they'll say something here.

LOL this reminds me of the "Bar or No Bar" rule in DDR tournaments.

As a parallel to this issue, what would become of custom controller layouts? I see resynching to be as much of a pain as having to modify your layout every time you hop from wii to wii.

I've heard that the layouts are saved for each classic or combo used, so you can go to different consoles. But I'll double check.

The only way you could save your layout would be to carry your wiimote around with you at all times, and there resurfaces the synching issues.

So I was wondering if we could make a poll to discuss and vote on layouts with which everyone would be comfortable playing with. Would many oppose disabling the joystick as a way of jumping as a standard? Also, since light shielding is gone (?), would the removal of the springs in the L and R triggers be acceptable in tournaments? Does the argument that the people who would do so gain an unfair advantage still hold?

The only smart people in this thread that stuck out are Kirby King and TheManaLord. (Props also to The Game II, I know who you are even if you don't know me lol. Get Your Tournament ftw.)

How can you quote from FR11 and say "what a big deal it is" when you have no clue? Synching and Desynching of controllers (WiiMote and Classic) could take up a ton of time. ESPECIALLY considering FR11 is HUGE. Let's not forget that FR11 is about MULTIPLE fighting games, not just Brawl. Hell, Brawl is one of the smaller games on their list so far (in terms of attendance). Several people that registered for Brawl registered for other games. It will be time consuming enough just having people run from one tournament game to the other, so the host is looking to minimize delays as much as possible.

The rule set was also essentially copied from Melee, and he has been editing it to accomodate Brawl. If you arn't a frequent visitor to the South, then you wouldn't know that he has been working hard trying to accomodate for US, the actual attendees that will be showing (Yes me being one of them, so I can make an argument to back him up thanks).

To put my own 2 cents about Wiimotes and classic controllers, they will be banned at my tournaments from the get-go, at least in the early years. Why? Because if you are a veteran of the Smash scene, you'll more than likely stick to a GC controller anyways. If you're new, you're more than likely to lose regardless of what controller you're using, so I may as well have you guys use the GC controller too.

Seriously, an issue here is about saving time, and if banning the use of other types of controllers that take time just connect will decrease delays, then it will happen. As far as the problems with controllers have functionality problems, it will become clear that wired controllers will top the scene once again should the wireless begin crapping out.

And you know what I really want to avoid?

Battery Johns. Seriously.

Tournaments in real life are way more fun than online ones. If you suck at the game, you'll suck no matter what controller you use. And if you don't go to tournaments, you aren't affected either way. So stfu.
