Is there any way to go up after that or do you plummet to your doom?

From my understanding its not that problematic... Avoidable.

Ugh that is bogus. It does seem like it can be avoided but at the same time it's definitely going to hinder recovery from below. Such garbage.

even if it is avoidable, you're going to be very vulnerable recovering above the opponent. im hoping they fix this before the american version comes out.

This is not a glitch. This won't be fixed.
That is a Cypher. It is pretty weak (at least on the game).
This just balances the Cypher: very good recovery, but no one can touch it.

No, Snake can attack when falling from the Cypher. It's not like being above someone = death.

You just fall and can't recover. I still have no idea why but that's that, if someone grabs the Cypher then you just can't whip out another Cypher and fly back up. If someone attacks the Cypher then you can pull out another one. Hope that answered your question.

Another solution is to stay away from the ledge. That seems much more obvious and helpful than self-detonation.

Conclusion: self detonation is the "emergency solution". Yay.
