View Full Version : OoT Mirror Shield idea

I just finished OoT on Wii's Virtual Console (still an amazing game) and had an idea for SSB even though the Link used is from TP:
It would be a great addition and gameplay dynamic to put the Mirror Shield from Orcarina of Time. It should work as it does in OoT at Desert Temple where it will absorb three of the same energy projectile attacks then fire that same attack back amplified. If a different type of energy attack is absorbed in the process, the stored up energy is lost and process has to start over. Just like the Desert Temple boss fight! It can also reflect any light beams a few a seconds like certain switches in the Desert Temple as well (i.e. Samus energy beam type of attack)
One good example is Mario shooting 3 fireballs as Link while Link is guarding with mirror shield. The three fireballs are absorbed into shield, it flashes slowly on first fireball, gets quicker as each one is absorbed, then after 3rd is absorbed, a few rapid flashes then a huge fireball three times the size shoots out (or a large flame is shot out instead for a few seconds)
To further balance the shield's power, it's attacks are limited to elemental types to round out arsenal (Gale Boomerang for Wind, above Mario/Link example for Fire attack; projectile water/ice attack from pokemon, Ice Climbers, etc for a Water/Ice blast; and something else for an Earth like attack.)
P.S. Would the Silver/Gold Gauntlets be a decent addition as well?

What would samus' charged shot/missiles be considered as?

that's the part I'm not sure about, that's why I just went with the elemental theme to limit the variety of the return fire. It would be too much to have the shield repel with the same attack only amplified. It would make Link to strong. (or would it? Fox is the only one I know who has similar reflecting attack) I also went with the elemental theme because that's all that was involved in the boss battle in OoT (Fire/Ice)
Samus' charged shots may fall under light attacks and thus be simply reflected like the sun's light in the Desert Temple of OoT. The Missiles will be simply blocked like normal since they're not energy projectiles.
What could be a good attack to absorb for my proposed Earth return fire to round out the elemental theme?

Rock smash, razor leaf maybe.. other than that i dunno.

Link would be a little too powerful if he had that. If that happened then Mario's fireballs and Samus's charge shot would not only be useless but would also go against them if they used it against link. Maybe he could have it where he has to shield it just as the attack is hitting. That might balance it out a little bit. Cool idea though.

Another cool idea would be to try and implement some other OoT or TP weapons in Brawl somehow. Maybe even as regular items for everyone to use, now there's a twist! Link's old weapons used again him!
The top ones in may opinion would be the Mirror Shield as mentioned above, Biggoron Sword, Megaton Hammer, Silver/Golden Gauntlets, Fire/Ice Arrows, Iron/Hover Boots, Ball and Chain, Spinner, Double Hookshot, and the wand to control the statues in Temple of Time in TP.
The Double Hookshot can be balanced by it's very nature where one has to be used before the other can. So when Link is hanging off the edge of a stage in tether mode with one, he can use the second to pull himself to another lower level in range if avaible or pull character at edge off for a possible sneaky KO, etc.
Fire/Ice Arrows could simply be a powerup item for characters with arrows like Link (obviously), Pit, etc.
Iron/Hover Boots as items that either keep a character on the stage and harder to knock away for KO or momentarily hover in mid air to save themselves from falling of edge.
Silver/Golden Gauntlets could be used to balance Iron Boots above and throw/knock character with Iron Boots on just like normal or do the same for Giga Bowser, characters with huge mushroom, etc.
The Biggoron Sword could have the same random dud effect as the Golden Hammer where sometimes the item will break after a strike or two like the fake one (and then only be good for just throwing at opponent) or other times be the real one.
The Timple of Time statue wand (forgot name) in TP could be used to temporarily control oppenent like the statues in TP. Maybe just only able to contol movement and one standard attack of "victim" for a few seconds and then lose control. Make it a very rare item by default and only one on screen at a time like the Smash Ball.
The Megaton Hammer, Ball and Chain, and Mirror Shield are pretty much self explanitory (or explained above  ). I'm not sure how to implement the Spinner if at all possible. Maybe even allow each version of Link (costume/color) to have access to one of these items instead of bombs or bow and arrow. Like Mirror Shield for Red Link since it's red in place of Hyrulian Shield, or Ball and Chain in place of Bow and Arrow for anther Link, the Megaton Hammer in place of bombs for another, etc.

Maybe the double hookshot could be sort of a second hookshot. Like if you miss with the first shot you have a second one to back it up. The gauntlets and boots have a very high possibility of being in Brawl. After all, there is a lack of Zelda items, and now that we know that the stickers offer status enhancements I could see items doing the same. Last but not least, I was hoping that the fire and ice arrows could be WW Link's arrows if he ever makes it into SSBB.

Most of these ideas have proberably been disscussed during the development of the game, though you have to remember that a lot of effort goes into making these characters balanced. Link can already stop pretty much any projectile by standing still with his shild out or crouching with it out. Though as those attacks wouldnt be hitting him anyway, and chances are you arent going to attack him with the same thing three times in a row unless you are an idiot (who ever saw mr.game and watch use his bucket item and he didnt have to absorb the same attack).
I dont know, perhaps give him this, but take something else away from him. e.g. bombs that dont explode on inpact, ones which have to wait the full 5(?correct me if im wrong) seconds before exploding, this makes for more tactical use of them.
