Ice Climbers: New Game?

Ice Climber was a NES game and it is availible on virtual console. I kinda liked it, it was fun with two people. But they appeared on Melee, even tohugh they were only in one game form way back. And, they are back in Brawl as a veteran. When i played melee, i saw the ice Climbers and said "Who the heck are they?" becuase I never saw them before. I'm sure many of you have said the same. I never would have discovered Ice Climber if the hadn't been in Melee. Now they are back in Brawl, but I think it's odd that a character (or two, I guess) that appeared in one old game has been in two smash games.

I think that a new Ice Climber game would be cool. Of course, not climbing up hill on a 2-D screen to get vegetables over and over agian. But an adventure game (3-D!) where you will ave to control them to travel to different mountains and collect stuff, such as crytals, or gems, or staffs, or medallions, or icicles, or hammers, or vegetables, or anything you think of that will solve there mission, similar to Zelda, where you have to go to dungeons and collect things, such as gems, fairies, or medallions. You will collect things like pickaxes, ropes, hammers, ice gloves, etc., to help you on your journey. Endless possibilities. Sticking with the classic, "vegetables" they could heal you.

Ok, after reading this over, it does sound a little crazy. I just think that another Ice Climber game would be cool, similar to Zelda games. Post your thoughts.

I was actually thinking about this today. But a game that keeps the same concept. Jump from platform to platform.

Just with more modes, and next-gen graphics, etc. etc.

yes, i agree. it shouldn't be too different from the original one, but it still needs to be abnle to compete with other games of today.

Well, Melee was the top selling game on the Cube, so I've been expecting a new Ice Climber game for a while now. But if Melee wasn't enough, Brawl will be.

I can imagine a next-gen Ice Climber game as a combination between the 3-D Mario games and the 3-D Zelda games. The Climbers would have some sort of base camp in a mountain range, and they could access several different mountains. Each mountain would be a "dungeon" split into several levels, revolving around platforming. Equipment like pickaxes and ropes would be a necessity, but I think would be awesome if they had/gained the ability to directly manipulate ice to create platforms and such.

I think this is actually happening. I was looking for new Wii games and I came across some retro characters from brawl article and it talked about a possible new Kid Icarus game and Ice Climbers game. Unfortunately I have no source. It was a while back and I didn't think much of it so I didn't save it.

There was talk of a game called Dead Phoenix being retooled as a Kid Icarus sequel, but that turned out to be a hoax.

And G&W isn't a dead character either; the most recent Game & Watch game is Game & Watch Collection (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_%26_Watch_Collection) for the DS, though it's Japan-only.

Personally, I think that some of Nintendo's older characters are ready for some new life (outside of Brawl, that is). If done correctly, Ice Climber and Kid Icarus could be excellent next-gen games on the Wii or DS, and the Virtual Console is a perfect place to test out previously Japan-only games (in fact, they've done it already with Super Mario Bros. 2j and Sin & Punishment).

i agre with all of you. i just think that game and watch wont get a neww game, because he is 2-D, and i cant think of anything you could do with him. mabey at the beginning of the ice climbers game, you would get ice gloves that have powers to let you control ice blocks and ice and ice and ice, etc. you could get upgrades to them during your journeys. yhey would help you clear obstacles or defeat enemies.

Ice Climbers just deserve a new game. You may use Popo and Nana and they two may have different powers and stuff like that, with cooperative mode... I like it! Let's make it! XD

I think Ice Climbers would do best if kept to its roots, maybe turn the mountain into 3-D with the camera and base controls of Mario 64. It could be more point based and arcade-like (playing for best points instead of to beat the final boss). I think a full Ice Climbers game couldn't really be realized without utter deviation from the formula or to be an absolutly unique semi-twist on the original (like super graphics and based on exploring the mountains geting to the top in emersivly beutiful enviroments, with Topis and Polar Bears returning but more exploration then combat). If it goes the point route, which I think would be good, it would make an awesome WiiWare (I believe that's what it's called) game, maybe even using Brawl's character models.

I once kicked around ideas for an Ice Climber game (not that I actually have the ability to make one). But I kinda pictured it like Mega Man Legends, that is to say a cross between 3D Mario and Zelda. My idea has Popo and Nana as orphans who run away from their neglectful guardians to scale and explore Icicle Mountain, the last place where their parents were seen. Their adventure then takes them all over their home region of Infinite Glacier with various platforming challenges and side quests, like recovering stolen crops of vegetables from a condor *wink wink*.

To expound is spammy, but here's a possible list of items for such a game.

Fire Kit: Allows you to build a warm fire. You can then unroll your sleeping bags and rest. When you wake up the next day your life will be restored and your temperature will be normal.
Whole Wheat Crackers: Restore a little life.
Peanut Butter Sandwich: Restores a little more life.
Deli Sandwich: Restores a lot of life but cools you off.
Hot Cocoa: Raises your body temperature back to normal.
Drumsticks: Hot chicken meat that restores life and warms you up a bit.
Fruit Salad: Needs to be kept cold so it won’t spoil. It restores a lot of your life energy and gives you a boost in stamina and strength, but it also cools you off a bit.
Fur Parka: Both Popo and Nana have this equipped at the start. It is a fluffy fur coat designed to resist the elements. It absorbs water somewhat readily, though, so keep yourself dry to avoid freezing to death.
Heavy Raincoat: Some level segments require you to swim underwater. Not only do you have to worry about breathing down there, but the water in the polar regions is terribly frigid as well. This wetsuit repels water and keeps you from freezing when you climb out of a lake. It doesn’t keep you as warm as other coats on land, though.
Down Coat: An expensive garb that keeps you very toasty and is somewhat water-repellant.
Tanooki Suit: A fluffy raccoon suit that provides excellent protection. The tails allow you to fly higher and farther than normal when you perform a Squall Hammer attack.
Ice Hammer: The primary weapon of the Ice Climbers. A heavy wooden mallet that can crush both ice and bad guys alike.
Icicle Crasher: A strong pickaxe that can cleave stone.
Rubber Mallet: The heads of this hammer are made of strong rubber wheels so you can ride it safely across dangerous floors, narrow bridges, and taut ropes. Unlike a Segway Personal Transporter though, you can whack creatures with it too.
Dynamite: Nukes monsters, blows open cracked things, you know. Be careful not to trigger avalanches!
Plastic Explosive: An upgrade from regular dynamite. This can be tossed and fired to stick to walls and ceilings, then detonated remotely.
Topi’s Emerald: This is said to contain concentrated ice energy.
Elastic Rope: Needed to perform a bungie jump or a belay.
Nylon Rope: This has a hook on one end so you can grapple objects and pull them toward you. You can also grab walls, ceilings, and rocks so you can swing across gaps or tie the rope down at your end to create a precarious makeshift bridge.
Cotton Paper: This stuff is a bit expensive at first, but it’s also tough, durable, weatherproof, and your primary means of earning money. As you explore the game’s myriad levels, Popo and Nana will map out their progress on this paper as they progress through the uncharted territory. When you return to town, you can sell copies of your maps for huge wads of cash. The more you explore and the more secret areas you uncover, the more valuable your maps will be.
Snowmobile: Similar to Epona from Zelda 64: Ocarina of Time, except it isn’t alive. This is an expensive item that you will probably obtain through the story. It allows you to travel faster on the world map and even reach certain towns and areas that are impossible or too dangerous to reach on foot. Take good care of your snowmobile. If it gets damaged or stolen, it may be a bit of a hassle to get it back.

thanks CK2OXX. nice first post. that is a great idea for a new ice climbers game. some people say that a new game for ice climbers wouldnt be able to compete with the games with today. well, who says it needs to be like the original ice lcimber game? it colud still involve getting foods, climbing mountains, breaking ice with hammers, killing polar bears and condors and those weird furry things i forgot the names of.

The Ice Climbers don't have any kind of canon relationship. Brother/sister, boyfriend/girlfriend, father/daughter (haha, just kidding), nobody knows.

I seriously doubt they're orphans though.

Although this idea of a huge 3d adventure for the ice climbers sounds good, i think a much more probable idea would be a 2D DS game similar to the original where you jump on platforms to get higher while fighting enemies and using tools/techniques. It could take advantage of the two screens by allowing you to climb up onto top screen or drop down to the bottom screen, you know what I mean.

I see this working better on the DS than on the Wii, but it certainly has some promise. A new Kid Icarus, however, would be amazing on the Wii.

there are endess possiblities for a new ice climber game. it would be great if someone made one. with melee including them, and with brawl soon to be including them, they will renew popularity, even though they pretty much have been the last few years with melee, it would make sense to make one. lol, wouldnt it be awesome if Sakurai made the new ice climbers game? ya rite.

Man.. I wish they took all classic games, and gave it a spin in 3D. :D Even if the game is exactlly the same.. it would definitely bring back many fans.

Not to mention they could establish more franchises depending on success. Ice Climbers was fun.. but REALLY hard. In fact, so hard, that you can choose the level yourself...

My highest achievement was getting to level 3. THAT is sad, lol.

I've recently discovered how cool the ice climbers are, as for awhile they've just been sitting doing nothing in the character select screen. A new game would ROCK! A combination of mario-style platforming along with zelda-style dungeons sounds like a marvelous idea! A new kid-Icarus rpg would rule two.
