<p align="center">Today’s update reveals classic mode once again has returned.</p>
<p align="center"><img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/various11_071030a-l.jpg" alt="It's a classic!" align="middle" border="0" height="315" width="400" /><!--more--></p>
<p align="center">Just like in the old mode, you choose a character, set of stock and level difficulty.</p>
<p align="center"><img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/various11_071030b-l.jpg" alt="Stage 1" align="middle" border="0" height="315" width="400" /></p>
As usual, the Metal, Giant, Team matches still take place through out the mode. Sakurai said the world you fight in is pretty much determined by stage number:
<blockquote>The world you fight in is pretty much determined based on stage number. Stage 1 is based on The Legend of Zelda. Stage 3 is based on Pokémon. And each time, the characters are chosen randomly.</blockquote>
<p align="center"><img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/various11_071030c-l.jpg" alt="Allies!" align="middle" border="0" height="315" width="400" /></p>
<p align="center">As usual heart indicators are used to establish allies from foes.</p>
<p align="center"> <img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/various11_071030d-l.jpg" alt="Course Clear!" align="middle" border="0" height="315" width="400" /></p>
Sakurai also mentions about the coinage we see at the clear screen and I can already postulate what these are for because some video from Subspace Emissary made it known. Those coins are used to turn your enemies into trophies. But here are Sakurai’s own words, you can judge for yourself:
<blockquote>Huh? You’re wondering what the coins on the Stage Clear screen are for? Um, you think they’re there to make it look more lively?
No, no. You earn and save these up little by little as you play. And supposedly you can use them somewhere. But no—you don’t use them to shop.</blockquote>

You think he made all of those coins in just one match? That'd be a fun change. :P

...I think they need more characters from each series to base it on different places and have the characters from those places random...

Ugh I can't believe I stayed up for that. hopefully the coins will be more useful than spending on trophies...

I'm guessing like Kirby's stage is always a team battle with two of the three characters against a giant version of the third? Not every franchise has the same amount of reps so this format of a battle isn't interchangeable with every franchise.

I liked Melee's Classic :( Now you can't fight anyone on the first round randomly! Man, keep the old, CLASSIC style.
Geez.
EDIT: Just realised - it's the stages that are fixed, not the characters you fight. My bad.
Idea: Unlockables based on how many coins you have. Kinda weird, but I can't think of anything else.
1000 coins = Jigglypuff
2000 coins = Luigi
10000 coins = Racoon Mario Alt. Costume

I thought the coins would be used for buying some new stage/ character in the wii shop, but then he said you dont shop with them. So how are you going to actually turn charcters into trophies anyway?

There's still one button left on the controller, I believe. The fourth taunt spot.

Hmm... seems like Stage 5 is Kirby. The backgrounds look the same.
I wonder why it's been odd-numbered so far.

Look through the videos of GameTrailers.com of the SubSpace Emissary which has Mario and Pit working together. You'll notice that Mario picks up a Smash Coin and hurls it at the enemy and it turns into a trophy.

He is like always the first person on Classic mode to face. Except in melee but did you also see that the coins in the subspace emisary videos turn into trophies once you hit someone with it. I'm sure it was the DK and diddy one. and the Trophie unvield a Koopa o.o Not sure.

For those of you who have played Super Paper Mario, it would seem true.
Remember catch cards?
You use a card on an enemy and it turns it into a card..and the you have it as a collectible.
Makes sense right?

wow holy crap you are right also if you look at the dk vid you can see that diddy kong uses a coinn to call dk and at the side of the screen there is the coin holder i wonder if that is how you get to the boss either to have or use all five coins....... that crazy

I like the fact that the game modes section of the Dojo is filling up quite nicely, and it's good to have Classic back.
...I think they need more characters from each series to base it on different places and have the characters from those places random...
Exactly what I was thinking. Does this mean they will try to provide at least 2 characters for every franchise? I hope so, but I still see the possibility of one franchise being overlooked and so you just fight that one character every time.

I thought the coins would be just used for the Lottery like in Melee. It's not purchasing technically. But who knows *shrugs*
BTW does the whole random character to a stage mean that franchises will be getting more characters than we might have thought or does it just confirm what we have thought.

Yeah, maybe this means at least 2 reps for every franchise. We can hope.

It just wouldn't be the same if they didn't have classic mode.

To the people that think that this confirms every franchise gets at least 2 reps, it doesn't. Classic mode has always been random and it still is. It's not like you will always have a franchise for a stage. The only reason we see two kirby teamates and a giant kirby enemy is because Sakurai likes to show off his creations on the Dojo. It's perfectly fine to fight Giant Mr.G&W with Pokemon Trainer and Yoshi as our partners.
Edit: Oops in my tiredness/stupidity this morning I misinterpreted the update and now I do see that it looks like you will fight random franchise characters on their respective stages.

Will Classic Mode exclude bonus games?

It would be awesome if you saved up coins to earn characters. Maybe that's what it means?

Then wouldn't you technically be buying them?

Reminds me of the original Super Smash Bros. where every stage is set with a franchise.

Maybe it's like how the original smash did Damage and Time score, then went on to named bonuses.

I REALLY hope they keep bonuses and that in the pictures presented, the option for bonuses was disabled (I'm taking a long shot here) - I really liked that addition in Melee...

I knew classic mode was gonna stay, and for the coins they do turn things into trophies in subspace i also remember seeing that video Donkey Kong turns a Koopa into a trophy by throwing the coin to him.

It's nice to see Classic mode confirmed but I wonder what will be the replacement for the Wireframes. They sure kept most of this in secrecy.

There's no doubt that Classic Mode would be returning. However, I wonder what the coins would be used for if there's no shopping.

I'm not sure why I'm so worried about Ganondorf not returning. But this update gives me a little bit of hope, because, the first stage being Zelda themed and only having the possibility of one of two different characters seems improbable, especially for it being such a big franchise.
Announce Ganondorf and my life will be whole again.
