Job 123: Ridley (Metroid)

Metroid seems pretty small at only one character. So Ridley is a neat choice.

Job #123
Character Name: Iron Valiant
Character Origin: Pokémon Violet
(2022)
Character Franchise: Pokémon

While a lack of Metroid characters is a good point to mention, it also brought to mind another big (relative) blindspot in this roster - Pokémon! While there's a lot of returning characters from the series that'd be fun to bring back, I'm also a fan of the idea of introducing someone new - and while there's over a thousand to pick from now, a character representing a big element of the most recent generation while also being a variant of one of the most popular Pokémon out there feels like a natural pick for this sort of thing.

Iron Valiant is a Paradox Pokémon, essentially being a future evolution of both Gardevoir and Gallade from an alternate, futuristic timeline. As such, it maintains design elements from both Pokémon - while also being its own unique thing overall! Plus, there's so much moveset potential here - even beyond the obvious use of a dual-bladed sword that retracts into arm-mounted blades for weaker attacks, Iron Valiant's Fighting / Fairy typing lends to plenty of potential moves (like Dazzling Gleam or Moonblast) to give its moveset its own unique flair. There's a lot of moveset potential here!

Overall - while it'd certainly be an odd choice - I think Iron Valiant would be a really fun one.

Music
(I'm guessing we're allowed to submit music for franchises already in the game? If that's the case, then...)
  1. Wily Stage 1/2 (Mega Man 2) (Remix) (Mega Man series)
  2. Opening Stage (Mega Man & Bass) (Remix) (Mega Man series)
  3. Frost Man Stage (Mega Man 8) (Mega Man series)
  4. Wood Man Stage (Mega Man 8 - Saturn) (Mega Man series)
  5. Esperanto (Mega Man Zero 4) (Remix) (Mega Man series)
  6. Battle With Wario! (Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins) (Remix) (Wario series?)

Definitely agree with Knee here that we're alarmingly sparse on Pokemon. I contemplated between Greninja and Mewtwo, but since we already have Pikachu and Pokemon Trainer (so Squirtle, Ivysaur and Charizard) maybe we should skew more contemporary. And I mean, Greninja isn't that new anymore but I think there's something to be said about its longevity. Kalos is even going to be relevant again really soon. Plus, from a gameplay standpoint, I think a ninja character would be valuable and I'm not sure when we'll get around to Sheik (if at all).

Robin
FE is big enough for another rep and I think rapping the biggest game in the series and the one that saved the seires from being killed is something we should do. Came down to Robin or Chrom but I think Robin stands out the most, repping both mages and avatar characters.

I think the most glaring absence out of these is probably Meta Knight, although with three Kirby characters already I'm going to give slight preference toward a second face from Metroid. Both of them are pretty essential in my eyes, but with many heroes already having their rivals in the game it's about time he joins in. Those two pretty handily make up my top choices. From that point forward it gets muddier.

I really want to vote for K. Rool. I hope he makes the cut before we run out of time. For now though, I do think it's kinda wild that we only have two Pokemon characters. Like sure... technically four, but still. Iron Valiant is a really neat choice by the way, and I commend Knee on their creativity. I just think for now I'd rather play it safer with Greninja. And yeah, I like Greninja a lot more than Lucario. It's well documented but I just don't love Lucario in Smash... maybe with a sufficient rework, but as he stands I feel his moveset and gimmick come off a bit boring and undercooked.

Mr. Game & Watch and Robin also ought to be here. Every choice here is justified and worth adding. I'd probably have stuck my neck out for G&W a little harder if he was getting more support, but I'll follow the mob mentality and not toss a vote away. The competition is pretty tight between these three so I'll keep it moving, just know I'm supporting nearly all of these characters to be added eventually.

Ridley and Greninja are our next fighters.

Check In as 75% of the roster (treating Pokemon Trainer and Aegis as one unit here) is complete:
What is everyone’s stance on the roster? What do you like, and what would you like to see?
Is the format good that we have right now, and how can I improve this thread?
What is everyone’s stance on stages, assists, items, and game modes?

I think the roster is good so far overall. In terms of newcomers, we brought in some major characters, and there’s nothing realistic that I truly want. I could realistically see a Pokemon or Sonic newcomer join at some point.
In terms of veterans, we have been working towards bringing back the major players, and there are few more left to add like Miis and Meta Knight. In terms of other veterans, I’d like to see Ice Climbers, Sheik, and a few more Fire Emblem and Pokemon characters.
In terms of stages, The line up is cool so far. I’ll make sure that the next set of stages includes Punch Out!! in the nominations as I intentionally left it out previously in case another franchise was added. In terms of other stages, I think that a second new Legend of Zelda stage should help round things out, and I hope that there’s room for Fountain of Dreams and (Above) Peach’s Castle.
I don’t really have much to say about the other items.

The Roster
I think the roster has done great so far. Although I do feel like some series need more characters. We may have to lean more into series depth rather than series diversity at this point.

Kirby, Xenoblade, and Sonic could all do with another unique character. My pitches so far for these would be Meta Knight, Noah, and Dr. Eggman.

Mario and Fire Emblem, as much as some people seem to rag on it for having too many characters, seems like it could do with an extra character or two.

I like the current direction of the roster, but I’d like to see some more actually new picks, as in post-2018.

I think some series may have reached their limit too. I don’t think a fourth Animal Crossing character will be necessary, neither will extra choices for Street Fighter, and arguably Zelda.

Although I do have a question. Will we have a round for clones/echoes?

They tend to be added later in development, and I can see perhaps 3-5 spare slots opening up for extra characters who may not have been considered in any other way.

Bosses
I think the boss selection so far is fine. I can’t help but feel in some ways we should try to break out of the typical boss choices. Rathalos is a fine boss I can see getting in later, but we could look at some series that don’t typically get bosses in Smash.

Also the obvious omission of Master Hand bugs me and I want it to get in.

Stages
I’d like to see us bringing back Moray Towers and the Cloud Sea as stages, as Splatoon and Xenoblade seem pretty small in terms of stages.

I think we may have screwed up deciding on Sonic stages though. Studiopolis and Casino Night could be visually similar enough, and are both Classic stages.

Choosing a stage from Colours or Frontiers may have been the better option compared to a stage from Mania.

Fire Emblem could also do with another stage, maybe.

The Format
I think the current format is fine, as it lets other choices get a chance that may not have gotten in otherwise.

Items
I do wonder if perhaps there are more item slots than we know what to do with. Or maybe we need to have more series that don’t typically get items.

Splatoon feels like there could be some item options, just putting that out there.

And of course, the maestro of items himself, Mario, is full of choices, but perhaps we shouldn’t over do it on the plumber’s stash of items.

Assist Trophies
I think we’re doing good here. Bringing back plenty of old ones, while also bringing in plenty of new. Kamek, Nia, and Tifa are some of my favourite new picks so far.

I’d also like to see Oatchi get a shot as an AT. A fighter might be out of the question for Pikmin, but other areas could make up for it.

Conclusion
I think that the current format allows for flexibility with options, as well as letting new ideas shine through. I think continuing as we are is good, and there isn’t much I’d change, personally. I’d like to see what other people think right now.

I think we already have Pikmin for a fighter as in Olimar

The roster is pretty good. Our biases definitely skew toward older Nintendo eras, surprisingly the early 2000s wave, but we've dealt more contemporary successes a pretty fair hand thus far. I'm impressed that we got three Animal Crossing characters locked in, and that Splatoon garnered a second character. Some series like Pokemon and Fire Emblem are missing a handful of key players that make those sides of the roster feel a bit less fortunate. Perhaps it's a bit of rebellion against series that feel like they've had it too good for too long, but there's a good reason we have so many Pokemon in the real deal.

I'm getting concerned about the space left for certain characters to participate. If last round is anything to go by, Meta Knight should be getting added pretty soon. Nearing 15 remaining slots, I think veterans should be a priority. I'm worried about some of the weirdo characters with niche playstyles who may be neglected - I hope we can slot in Mr. Game & Watch and at least one other. We could use any of Ike / Robin, Mewtwo / Lucario, Falco / Wolf, and King K. Rool as well. Third parties are second priority to me but we can probably go a bit further than this too. Don't really know which newcomers I want to see.

Is the format good that we have right now, and how can I improve this thread?
The format is working okay. I think my main concern as of late is rounds focused on something like Pokemon or items have started to interest me less, feeling like I've used up most of my ideas. I'd like to see the roster build up a bit quicker, maybe we can start peppering in bonus rounds for a set amount of echo fighters or something as long as that isn't encroaching on the unique character count.

Should we vote on how many of those we think may be appropriate? Although maybe that would be best served post-roster, in the spirit of how Smash has been developed in the past to fit a few last minute additions deriving off existing fighters. I dunno, wouldn't mind either approach. In any case, it may also just be because I've been busy IRL, but I'm just thinking of other prompts that would engage me to participate every round.

I want to implement clones/echoes, but I’m unsure how. Please feel free to provide suggestions.

Punch Out is already a stage
I apologize for the confusion. While Punch-Out!! is a stage, it’s a past stage, and it’s the only represented franchise without a new one.

Based on the feedback, the biggest priorities seem to be the following in terms of fighters: Adding newer characters, building up existing franchises, and bringing back veterans.

Also, I’ll make the item and pokemon submissions no longer full jobs as these seem to be less popular.

Job 124: Submit a new Punch-Out!! and Legend of Zelda Stage.
 Screenshot

I’ll nominate Boxing Ring 2, which only uses the ring for the arena, and the players can use the edges as a way to launch themselves.

SSB64 Remix Tal Tal Heights.png
I’ll nominate Tal Tal Heights.
Job 125: Submit One or Two Moveset Changes to a Veteran Fighter.

For this bonus, please feel free to submit alts and 3 Pac-Man/Namco and Mega Man songs.

Perhaps have a few rounds of implementing echoes of some characters. I imagine 6-7 would be enough, as that was the amount Melee and Ultimate ended up doing.

New faces, or returning veterans could be added via jobs akin to current jobs for veterans, newcomers, etc.

Job 124:
a) Great Plateau Tower (Breath of the Wild)
IMG_6360.jpeg

We need to start getting some stages introduced in Ultimate in here. Breath of the Wild is still iconic, and I can see it having its stage remain.

b) Training Street? (Punch-Out!!)
Is there a unique name for this section? Please notify me if there is.
IMG_6282.jpeg

One of the most iconic parts from the game. If we had to have a second Punch-Out stage, I think this is a good choice.

Perhaps they could even change the landmarks to be less like real life if it’s an issue. Such as changing the Statue of Liberty into the Peach statue from Mario Kart 8’s Toad Harbour, and so on.

Job 125: Pyra and Mythra (Xenoblade) Changes
It may seem overblown, especially for a more faithful modern addition, but I think for some changes here, I’m unsure if the changes are too much. Are mechanic changes allowed? They are part of the moveset in general.

One, Pyra and Mythra would gain a party gauge. It would appear just above their character icon during a match. But why?
IMG_6283.jpeg

This gauge will increase as more damage is inflicted on foes. The gauge will increase slowly, however, but will raise faster as Pyra/Mythra’s damage will increase.

Once the gauge is filled, you will be able to access a new form by pressing Down+B (or even Up taunt if that’s allowed…?)…
which is Pneuma.
IMG_6284.png

And in a way, could be implemented as a souped up Mythra, with Pyra’s firepower. You could count her as an echo, or as part of Pyra/Mythra themselves.

Pneuma will only last for 30 seconds. So it’s advised not to rely on her too much. Especially as you may end up getting her once a stock, like Banjo’s feather dashes in Ultimate.

And if Pneuma does get included, maybe she could have some alts?

Pneuma Alts:
  1. Default Colours
  2. Flipped Colours (white to black, black to white)
  3. Colour change (white to yellow, black to red)
  4. Rex (Salvager) Colours (white to blue, black to brown, blue to gold)
  5. Dark Colours (akin to Pyra/Mythra P5)
  6. SSBU P6-like Pattern
  7. Flipped Colours (green to blue, blue to green)
  8. Colour change (white to platinum, black to gold)
Another change could be implemented, such as nerfing Pyra’s power and/or Mythra’s speed to compensate for a new form.

Pac-Man Songs:
Pac-Man Medley (Pac-Man)
