Shovel Knight was actually the first indie game ever. All other video games before then were published by companies with at least 5 million dollars. It all changed when Mr. Yacht Club Games got tired of working at the EA mobile game assembly line (you have to program on laptops that are moving on conveyor belts. It's really inconvenient,) and decided to make a game by only himself.

Personally speaking, I myself don’t know of a ton of pre-shovel knight indie characters. Aside from Shantae there’s Reimu, Quote from Cave Story, I think Commander Video also pre-dates Shovel Knight, and that’s all the examples I know of.

There's a pretty decent amount more than you think, but I'm not asking for the roster to have an even split between new and old, or majority old.
Shovel Knight did arguably start a golden age of indie games, one that we're still in today, I just don't like seeing characters from before him being left in the dust.
